Well I'm sure you're all aware about the proprietary streaming tech that will be coming to PS3/PS4 this holiday season called Gaikai.

But how many of you think GT5/GT6 will be streaming for PS4?

Personally: I think this will happen. What say you?

Here's a tech demo of it in action a year ago

No, for the same reason that there has never been a PSN rerelease of any of the past GT games.

Gaikai is also kind of vaporware-y, I think.

Not so. Gaikai is the future of gaming. More-so, it opens up quite a lot of capability in terms of streaming and playing on demand that had never been before seen on consoles. Not only that, but they are also saying that ps4's entire catalog of games will be available on the service. As well as the top selling ps3 titles. GT5 is easily under that category. I'm thinking yes GT5 definitely, but GT6, not entirely sure.

I think the fact that Sony bought the technology and company outright, says that they have big plans and faith that it will work just fine. "Sony bought Gaikai in July 2012 for around $380 million to establish a new cloud service. The acquisition included all Gaikai's technology and infrastructure, giving Sony a large network of datacenters to deliver streaming content to its customers."

Streaming a racing game would make sense seeing as they're almost always peer to peer. Players with bad connections ruin races for other people with the bouncing around all over the place and all that connection weirdness, but if the games were effectively being played on a LAN or between datacentres with fast, robust connections, players with bad connections will... Oh, yeah, they'll lose control of their car and the effect will be the same.

Streaming introduces latency, it would be interesting to see how that would be handled, if that's even possible. I would rather not have to time all of my inputs to happen 60ms before they're supposed to just because of my ping.

Not so. Gaikai is the future of gaming.

Sounds like what Microsoft said about the Xbone's original setup. I'm hesitant to call anything the "future of gaming" unless the consumers actually show acceptance of it; and the initially highly-regarded trailblazer for Cloud gaming crashed and burned just 10 months ago.

Not only that, but they are also saying that ps4's entire catalog of games will be available on the service. As well as the top selling ps3 titles. GT5 is easily under that category. I'm thinking yes GT5 definitely, but GT6, not entirely sure.

GT5 is easily under that category of a best selling PS3 title. That means nothing for whether they will be able to do what essentially amounts to rereleasing it for the next system. The games Sony may or may not offer on the service are just as much of a slave to licencing agreements as they are for putting games on PSN, or reprinting a run of discs.

That's all true. I'm curious as to what the deal will be regarding ping with Gaikai. And licensing does have a big part of what games will and wont show up. I guess it's too early to tell how optimized playing on the cloud will be exactly. And how many headaches people with low bandwidth connections will have with the service.

But the fact that Sony put up near $380 million for the company, really makes me think "why?" If it was a question of maybe it will work, or maybe it'll be profitable, kind of goes out the window when you put up that kind of money.

I actually sold my PS3 and pre-ordered my PS4 a few months back, I'm going through GT5 withdrawals!

I doubt it'll be much use even if it does. On average Internet connections and servers are not good enough yet here in the UK at least.

If there are data centers or cloud servers nearby on all players who play online in the same lobby, there should be no lag issue. The only main problem is how many cloud servers are deployed worldwide, say one player in US has a server within 100 miles, another player in UK has a server within 50 miles, and both have very low ping to the servers, and obviously the cloud have great connection to each other, cloud gaming is perfectly fine. The only limitation would be the limited supported countries when Gaikai goes live.

Licensing issue should only be on Sony side, it's streaming service anyway, no game data is installed on the client, client only receives video.

Gaikai cloud servers are the key here, their availability and quality of service.

Yeah, so instead of glitching around the track when you have high ping like on PS3 while playing GT5, what will happen? Will the video bitrate just take a dive and get pixelated as opposed to blacking out or glitching around as usual?

I wonder how they are going to handle heavily online MMO titles on the cloud service. Will it adjust and delay signal for everyone else and cater to the person with the highest ping or what?

It should be interesting either way.

I'm going to just email Gaikai and ask them some things.
