Why don't Sony and Microsoft make these as upgradable budget gaming pc's ?.Like hi-fi separates you pay Microsoft/Sony to upgrade your console.Sony and Microsoft could work together to make an interface or Apple and Sony could make the menu's.What does everyone think about this.

Let me get this straight. You want the next gen gaming consoles to be upgradable PC's where you would pay Microsoft or Sony to do the upgrade for you and it will be a collaboration between Microsoft/Sony/Apple? On top of that these will be on a budget(inexpensive) gaming PC consoles?

Good luck with that.👍

That would be an absolute nightmare for developers. Now developers know exactly what hardware is in every single console and know the limits, if you have ten different PlayStations with 10 different hardware configurations the developer will either make the game look great and only be able to play on the maxed consoles, or it will look like a base PS4 game and then there is really no benefit to having a maxed console. Yeah, there could be options to select and change like a PC but most console gamers want to put a disc in and play, not put a disc in, play with all the options to make the game run as smooth as possible and then play.

That's the reason you have technitions mate, to change the settings for best result. It wouldn't be difficult for developers because the technology is already there. You could have standard graphics cards installed ( change if you want to ) and sound card etc.

I think the cost involved to probable profit from upgrades ratio is the problem. Look at basically any console that has offered optional hardware upgrades (I'm thinking Sega Mega Drive II/Genesis), they've been commercial failures. I can't think of any that have done well.

I don't see the point? If people wanted budget gaming PC's, they'll get budget gaming PC's. If they just want a console, they get a console.
MS/Sony would charge for all this, so your budget PC would cost as much as a decent PC, to do nothing more

Agree completely with these two points.

Will. Never. Happen.

I would have to agree with everyone else. There's no point in it. That's what a budget PC is. Why wouldn't microsoft just ditch the xbox and focus on PC gaming if they had an idea close to yours?

Wouldn't work. Profit from sells should go to only one company, not several

The whole point of consoles is that every PS3 is the same and every 360 is the same, games are developed for that console and are pushed as far ad they can go on that engine, with upgradable consoles you would be left with people who can't afford to upgrade and developers will just make games for the lowest spec to make the most money leaving the people who did upgrade feeling let down.

Exactly. 👍 Why would anyone buy a solution that has all the drawbacks of PC vs console and none of the advantages?

I second this question, aren't iPads just fancy hand held consoles in the first place?

I agree with the observation, consoles have moved way to close to PC in a sense that they offer almost none of the advantages (flexibility, no walled garden) and suffer from many of the drawbacks a PC has (patching, bugs, etc.). If anything, iDevices have shown us how to set up a working walled garden, with software that always works straight out of the box, all available through electronic distribution and low prices/F2P.

I can definitely see a movement towards a game console/app console that is more like iOS and/or Windows 8 Phone. If they move the other way, you'll end up with a situation as I describe above (you basically have a PC with none of the advantages but with all the drawbacks).

But time will tell.

I buy a console for a reason. Because the hardware is the same and can't be upgraded.

Developer have advantage if the hardware is the same.
Upgrades would cost a huge amount of money. The 360 had a 120gb HDD for 120$. Just look at the Vita too.

If you want overpriced, hard to develop, not efficient hardware use your idea.
