Incase you've never noticed this, everytime PSN wants you to update your PS3 firmware, your actually pulling down EVERY SINGLE update plus the new one. Which means that even for something as simple as the new 3.55 to stop more jailbreaking, your actually downloading every update since the PS3 servers where connected and used first time.

This is why I think that PSN needs to move to service packs. You download the service pack that is most recent (comes with all the updates up till now) and then future updates to an extend come out as incremental files (JUST that one update, now all versions from 1.01 to 3.55).

Anyone else think this arguement / suggestion is worth pushing to Playstation? Im fed up having to sit for ages waiting for updates to DL because my internet is weaker than other areas.

It can't be done in the way the current firmware is structured because there is no guarantee that every PS3 out there is on the previous firmware available to accept the new additions of code.

Sony tried to implement this once so they would only have to issue the few MB's of updates each time and it bricked loads of consoles (those who didnt have the immediate previous FW). They pulled this idea and put it back the way it was.

I personally don't want mandatory updates. I'm sick of them because they add 'fluff' which doesnt do all that much (nearly all are nothing to do with gaming). They also are extremely risky because you are replacing the entire OS each time, its comparable to flashing the BIOS on a motherboard which your supposed to never do unless absolutely necessary.

So they couldn't figure out a couple lines of code in order to download the appropriate updates in the right order? They could have set a max of two or something and then anybody over is pointed to the full update.

The only thing that bothers me is if I don't use the PS3 for a month and I get a new game, I'm usually stuck with a firmware update and a game update. This can be a huge hassle since the PS3's wireless is a bit hit or miss on my network.

There's a lot I don't understand about how Sony has handled this generation of console, train wreck springs to mind...

You would think it would be easy for the system to prompt you to get what you need but unfortunately people were downloading incremental updates for a firmware which they may not have had installed which caused the disaster.

I really dislike the fact that the games force firmware updates also. Its one thing to deny access to PSN if you don't update but another to totally render the gaming element of the console totally useless.

It also happens way too often, the 360 has had like 2 FW updates in its whole lifetime... NXE and Kinect. PS3 has at least one a month.
