I am thinking of a different situation.

I found the story at 1UP. It was the Modern Warfare 2 "Javelin" cheat.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177170

Yeah, that is different, although in this case I would agree with the author:

It makes a certain amount of sense; PlayStation Network accounts are free, so a ban would be easily and almost instantly overridden by simply making another account. Trying to catch cheaters who then become repeat offenders with multiple accounts probably isn't something Sony is eager to do, especially since Infinity Ward is working on a fix that will remedy the problem anyway.

Of course it might be a deterrent for trophy hunters.

One thing I love about the PS3 is that we can have as many accounts as we like, and even have up to 16 on a PS3 at one time. It would suck if Sony removed that feature to combat cheaters. It would be just another example of how when people who abuse otherwise useful features to cheat, end up ruining it for the rest of us... like losing Linux support.

Good luck with that, there will still be "cheaters" no matter what. Although a system like Steam has would be nice.

Exactly what cheating are you referring to?

If you are talking about cheat codes, then you are barking up the wrong tree, as those are put in by the game developers, not the publishers.

I wasn't talking about the low-level in game cheater, rather those persistent hackers that find new and ingenious ways to exploit game saves and configuration files, and ruin a good day at the office. 💡

If Sony is to offer an online service, they could start by hosting all user configurations and save files remotely. That would go some way to restore my confidence in online gaming. At the very least, Sony need to get tough, and start switching off the PS3s of those that choose not to play by the rules. 👍

Sony have the ability to ban PS3s by their MAC address. If they did that, then it wouldn't matter how many new accounts they made, they would never get back online again! 👍

And what examples of that are there for the PS3?

There are well documented cases with 360 and PC game saves and configuration files getting hacked, but as far as I know there has never been a case of a PS3 game save getting hacked.

In fact, if your beef is against hackers, you are making an even stronger argument in favor of Sony, not against it.

Hmm the current structure unchanged. The title should be renamed to avoid flame bait and confusion.

I would not pay to play online, just dont nerf the rest of the online features like the joke of a system called Xbox live silver membership.

You are wrong! Here is a hack for MW2 on the PS3, posted originally in the MW2 thread:

Also, COD4 on the PS3 was hacked too. 👍

Uh, exactly how does that video show that the game save was hacked? All that shows is a glitch in the game... like a lot of games.

No, it's a hack. You take the save and edit it in order to have no recoil. What it does however is remove the ability to look up or down from what I read, that's the only glitch in this whole thing.

Trust me DN, MW2 has been hacked. There are more than a few 'How To' videos on YouTube that show you how to do it.

Players in the game can select a long list of hacked cheats like, infinity health, automatic grenade launchers with infinite ammo, aim bots that allow you to see every enemy player no matter where they are on the map so you know exactly where they are at any give time, lag switching, one shot kill guns, etc. This game is infested with cheats. I'll come across one every four of five games I play online.

MGS4 was also infested with cheaters. One is the lag switching, wall shooters (hide inside walls and can't be killed but can kill you) and aim bot cheat that allowed for auto aim headshots. Check YouTube for 'how to' videos on these as well.

You obviously do not play the game DN. Anyone who DOES play the game, knows that it is blatant hacking, and not a glitch!

Here is another:

Roll forward to 7 seconds, and see what it says on the screen...

please make sure that your flashdrive containing your MW2 savedata is NOT inserted before clicking continue

DN, you must be delusional if you believe that the PS3 is hack proof, it is clearly not. So, as I have stated previously, remotely hosting save and configuration files would solve the vast majority of these problems, and would be a welcome addition to any premium service that Sony might offer in the future.

I have (although not much as it's not my kind of game), so clearly you are wrong.

Not only that, but I'm sure you have no actual proof that every single person other than me, who has ever played the game knows about the hacking.

Thanks for playing.... and exaggerating once again (which is just another form of lying). :ouch:

Here is another:

Thanks, as unlike the first video you posted, this actually shows the hacking.

DN, you must be delusional if you believe that the PS3 is hack proof, it is clearly not.

Putting aside the disparaging remark... I never said it was hack proof, so thanks. Not only that, but apparently the game saves for MW2 are not copy protected. Unlike some other games.

This is actually a pretty good idea, although it would depend on how it's executed.

I suppose this is why some game saves are now copy protected, which would help prevent hacking them, but the problem with games that have copy protected game saves is that you can't back them up, except by backing up the entire HDD.

So by remotely hosting our game saves, then not only would this help prevent hacking, but would also help prevent the loss of a game save and still have it copy protected. 👍

Thank SL and dave_sz for actually explaining what was going on. 👍

Of course I have no actual proof, but if you play a game, and you know it inside out, you know when something is not right. 👍

Both videos show hacking, the former, showed a hack in action, the second showed how to hack. Both prove that the PS3 is being hacked, just from different angles. 👍

My apologies if you thought my comments were disparaging, I was responding to this comment, where you said:

I think it is too, and it must be addressed if Sony decide to offer a premium service. 👍
