Assuming you are already manual / no assists / no traction control etc, drop your tyres to around sport hard / comfort soft level, this should bring you to around the pace of the AI in VR.
In fact, following the GT3 M6 around dragon trail, I think that's what they have done with the AI (possibly by mistake) - the M6 was sliding the tail out of corners, and dabbing the brake going into corners a little hot with a touch of understeer.
It levels the playing field to a point where it is actually enjoyable to race against the AI.
