I recently bought a new laptop for school, an HP DM1. For the last week I've taken it to school and browsed the internet there - once connected, both wireless networks would show a login screen once the browser was opened, before I could use the internet.

Last weekend I had the computer freshened up by a friend of mine whom I've had set up 3 other computers for me. He takes off all the trial offers like Norton and crapware and installs maintenance programs like Ccleaner, or things like Photoshop and Microsoft Office. I prefer to use Avast, which I have set up and working. He makes a business out of it, and I've got two desktops from him that have been running flawlessly for two years, along with a burnt-out old laptop that he brought back from near death.

But today I took the laptop to school, all set up and ready to go, and after it connected to either of my school's wireless network I would not show the login screen. I tried Firefox, Explorer, and Chrome and none of them would work, yet my secured home network connects automatically just like I told it to.

Any idea what is keeping that screen from showing up? Something he did might be causing the problem and I plan to contact him tomorrow, but since it's so late I figured I would post it here for some opinions. I'm having trouble finding articles about this exact problem - the only thing I found was this Windows 7 thread, but there is no answer there.

EDIT: I talked to my buddy about this issue and he said he didn't touch any internet settings but he'll take a look at it. Since he installed the Windows 7 SP1 update that may have caused a problem.

Yeah check your settings since the school may have specific settings the you need to enable.

Make sure obtain IP and all that is set to auto. That's what my problem was at school.

Thing that sticks out for me is "things like Photoshop and Microsoft Office." I assume you've purchased those? Or is he "gifting" you an illegal copy. If so, not something you want to be posting about. . . .

I know I'm making an assumption here, but the tone, and including it in a list with a freeware utility just made me wonder.
