Putting Old Hard Drive in New PS3

I would like to know a couple things about putting my old hard drive from my old fatty PS3 into my new one because I want to sell it for parts but would like to clear the hard drive.

For one, I don't really know much about technology, so is there any way I could plug the hard drive in to a computer and just clear it there?

If I pull my hard drive out of the working PS3, and put it back in after I clear my old one, will it reformat and delete all of my data?

Does the hard drive from the fat PS3 even fit in the new one?

I'm not sure why the fat one broke, I don't remember if it was YLoD, but assuming it was, can that hurt my new PS3?

You can but plugging it into the PS3 will format it also, I believe.

It won't.

Yeah, all PS3 HDD's are 2.5in notebook hard drives. Just remove it from the hard drive caddy and you'll be set.

No, it's a new PS3. The worst case scenario is that your data on the old PS3's hard drive is corrupted. Even if it is, it won't matter because once you plug it into the new PS3, it will be formatted for the new PS3 and all of your old data will be lost.

A couple of questions for the OP:

- What model of the fat PS3 are you having an issue with? What model of PS3 did you most recently purchase?

- Did you buy the old PS3 refurbished?

- Did you buy said PS3 with a extended warranty? If so, how many months are left with said warranty?

- Did you purchase an extended warranty from Sony themselves? If so, how many years?

If you answered yes to any of the above two questions, then call Sony support and send in the old PS3 for service. No need in taking it apart when you could have two working PS3s around.

It's the 80GB fat model.

It was new when I got it.

No warranty, and it has been 2 years or so.

Then assuming that the HDD in the old PS3 is bigger than what is in the new one currently, I recommend that you do a back up on the new PS3 and restore once you install the new/old HDD. You can go to the playstation website to guide you through it step by step. You will need an external HDD that is capable of working with the PS3, however, due to update 2.50. The whole process takes roughly about an hour depending on how much data is stored on the HDD that is being replaced.

No I Just want to format the hard drive because I'm going to sell it with the broken PS3. I have pictures of my family on there and don't want anyone seeing them.

My mistake. In which case, you can do a more practical approach and buy a enclosure for the HDD and wipe the drive that way. You can pick one up at Frys for less than $10.
