Hey I'm a newbie here so just go along with it....

so who here bothers with qualifying? I dont. with my play time being limited to 1/2 hr in any one session i just go str8 for the race and start at the back. but i think i like over taking more than winning :D

views plz

I only bother with qualifying if it's an endurance race. No point in spending 2 laps qualifying (one warmup, one hot lap) for a 2-3 lap race.

Only races of 20 laps and above deserve qualifying. Gives you a nice quick-practice lap before the marathon though :).

It's handy for difficult courses like special stage route 11 when you're trying to keep a faster car behind you. Beginner Turbo race there is proving a tough nut to crack, I'm always having to block that damn 3000, but I can never keep it up for the 2 laps, always make a mistake somewhere and let it in .

But the best way I've found is to qualify, get second (because you aren't going to get first) and out accelerate it to the first sharp turn. Then use every dirty trick in the book to keep it behind you. Trouble is, I'm writing the book as I do it. The closest I've got so far is 3.6 seconds behind in an Evo VII GSR.

:reallyodd That was the first race I won! The trick -> WALLRIDING!

BTW, I never bother with qualifying unless it's a track I don't already know -> Cote D'Azur and Complex String for example.

i'd qualify if they gave you $$, like in Gran Turismo.
but, i agree with Ferrari 308, i wouldn't qualify for 2-3 lap races, and i don't do enduro's because of the "no $$" and, i always use an F1 for those, so the computer tends to put me in first before auto drive lets off.

There was only about 5 races where I felt the need to qualify properly in order to win the race ( I was driving a much less powered car compared to the computer cars in those races).

Anyway, qualifying is a good change to setup your car properly for the track your about to race, and it helps you to get "confortable" with the track sooner!

Otherwise I´ll just skip it.

I usually qualify, but that's because I really like to measure my car against the competition. If I can start from the basement and be in the lead by turn 1, I'm running too much car for the race to be fun. I've run some series, where I only have one allowable car but it's too powerful, where I have started last and taken a couple laps to gain the lead. I don't feel bad about those.

I will usually try to run any race where I can qualify third or better. If I have the pole by more than a second or two, I either detune or switch to a different car.

For Enduros, if I know in advance which car I'm going to run, I never bother to qualify. In a short race with evenly matched cars, starting position is critical. But in a longer race it has less and less significance.

Welcome to :gtp: Ving

I find that if you get a really good start and take off you can get well stuck into/past the pack at the first corner? :car::gcar:, :curvyrd:

Oh, look at that everyone. Some of us actually like to RACE . :p I couldn't agree more with this.

The other reason I run qualifying laps is to test a particular set-up on a given track. This is particularly helpful when tuning a car for the first time.

I have only seen two downsides to qualifying. First, it does take more time to get through the races. Second, it does rack up the miles on your car. This can be a problem on the longer series races where you can't change your oil. One or two qualifying laps won't hurt, but going forever just to get the pole might!:smilewinkThe oil light in the fourth or fifth race is just not cool.

I agree with quattro and neon, qualifying is essential in Amateur / Pro races of 5 laps or more, except enduros. I also qualify for all F1 races except Test Course, cause in an all F1 race, every second is critical.

I always qualify since Ive got to the harder races.
When you first start, the competition usually isnt so strong as in the second half of the game..
One other thing, has anyone else that the cars in qualifying are slower than the cars in the actual race? Ive found myself getting really close when I barely qualify in the number 1 position and have to race the race. Its usually first or second place on those.

Woo hoo, my 1,000th post, a milestone for me. :haha:

I wish there was an endurance race at Complex String. I'd race that over and over again! That would be like Le Mans, GT3-style!

I'd surely qualify for that one! :D

 I wonder if we'll ever jave a 24hr Race in :gt:? It would be good practice for Complex String, you'd be perfect after 24 hrs :smilewink

I'd definitely race it :). Think of how much fun that would be. There could be an international event held on a big server at Complex String.

Maybe 2-3 person teams, kind of like Le Mans. Classes and cars, and everything! Someone would need to hack GT3 to make it so it could be i.Linked with 80+ cars though :)

Sure would be fun though!

Actually, when it's an F1 race, I prefer not to qualify. My favorite racing is to start 6th at the 78 lap Monaco F1 race. It's always fun to go into that first corner with 6 screamin' F1s. Wish it was more, but it's fun nonetheless :)

i qualify more for the practice than the position. i know the courses well (i should by now, only been playing since the first day it came out) but each course is different for each car. I work out settings and shift-points and stuff like that.

Yeah, that's always a good idea. Works very well for endurance races, because you can test your settings before-hand, rather than having to live with them throughout the entire duration of the race :).

Mind you that works for tire selection as well. You can see how many laps your tires last, and based on that, decide which compound to use :)

For those of you that like to qualify for position. Here's a tip, if you are running on a harder compound tyre. On the first out lap, do what real racers do and swerve form side to side when you go down straights. It warms your tyres up faster so you can get racing for position quicker rather than waiting for 2 or 3 laps for T2 tyres to heat up enough, you can do it on your 1st flying lap, plus it give you the realism of racing.

Thanks for the tip Speed2, Ive tried this and it does seem to work. Heck, even if I find myself behind in the actual race, I do tis to get the grip I need. ;)
Nice tip.

Exactly right, usually infront within a couple of seconds... quals are a wast of time.
