Hi guys,

Got an interesting senario. About two weeks ago I purchased an Aspire AS8943G Notebook for home use. I tend to either use it for casual gaming while sitting on the couch or if I can get enough time away from the kids, I head into the study and plug it into a dock setup with the racing rig. Anyway I digress. About a week after purchase I was on the couch processing some family photos in Lightroom when I noticed a vertical yellow line about one pixel wide stretching from the top to the bottom of the screen. It fluctuated in strength, being more noticeable, then fading, then becoming more visible again. I plugged it into the rig to make sure that it was the monitor and not the graphics card doing this, which had confirmed my initial assessment.

Being that the notebook is only a week old at this point, I called Acer the very next day and they said they will take care of it under warranty etc and that I'll need to send it in. Being a lengthy process to arrange, I continued to use the laptop for the next week and a half while I waited for Acer to sort out the postal arrangements. The yellow line has however not appeared again since that one day. I fear that sending it off will result in no action by them as they will open it up and find nothing wrong.

Any suggestions on what could have caused this? I was certain the line of pixels had died but everything is back to order now. I have heard of iPhone 4 screens having yellow lines that take some time to "cure" when new. Could this be a similar circumstance?

Sounds like videocard artifacting to me. From overheating likely. Any time I had that type of occurance that was always the cause. If the laptop sits on your lap you could be covering a vent or something or the heatsink is seated poorly.

Vertical lines in an lcd screen are usually caused by the connection of the video cable to the actual lcd panel. It is a "bonded" connection, and if it isn't a good bond you get the vertical lines. On a TV you can press on the bonded connector and cure the problem; I've fixed a couple by just putting something between the connector and the rear cover; anything that will press against the connector.
