I looked around and didn't see a post about this anywhere, granted I was not sure what to put into the search engine in order to bring back an answer to this specific question, so.

This has me kind of frustrated, since I know the game asked me once but I can't remember where or when now. -- Where is the setting in the Gran Turismo Mode to put the top up or down on a Convertible car? It asks you right when you select the car in arcade mode, but I looked in GT mode and either I'm just blatantly missing it or I dunno what.

Where's the option?!

The option is only in Arcade Mode, when you start a race it gives you the option along with the tire selection, driving aids, etc. In simulation mode you don't have the option; when you enter a multiple car race, it goes with the top up (covered) and when you enter 2-car races (Rallies, Tsukuba Wet, Costa di Amalfi, etc), it goes with the top down (uncovered). Also whenever you do free runs, you get the top down.

The top-down convertible feature in GT4 is actually a very pointless one. They did such a poor job implementing it that the resources required from the PS2 are too much for anything more than a time trial or one-on-one race. The only way you would be able to drive with the top down in GT mode would be if you did a practice session on one of the courses, but I'm not even sure about that. Your best bet for top-down racing is arcade mode.

That's strange, I can't remember which car, but I'm almost positive that with one of the convertibles it actually asked me when I went to buy it: "Do you want the top up or down?" -- Not in those exact words but the option did come up. I can't remember which one or I would get another one and check that out.

Also, heh'. No, no! I want the top up! The top was down on the car and I want it up! -- I'll be turning the game on in a few minutes, I'll enter a multi-car race and such.

Okay, when you do a time trial in arcade mode, it leaves you no choice but to have the top down and in multicar races you're offered the choice. I'm not gonna be buying any more new cars in GT mode but I'm still sure that one of the cars I bought, I was given the option right there, whether I wanted the top up or down on it. But even if it does give you that choice with some of the cars, it's apparently not all of them, so maybe there are a few in GT mode where you're given the choice for some reason and not any of the others.

But I appreciate the thoughts on the matter. Thanks people.

If you enter a multicar race in Arcade mode and choose to run it with the top down, it will only allow two cars. If you select top up, the whole six-car-grid will be on.

Moreover, the TVR V8S '91, no matter where you race it, is always with the top up, even though it's a convertible as well.
