My PS3 (CECHE01 Model, 80 GB HD with PS2 Emulation) only has 10 GB left and I am looking to purchase a new HD in order to keep the emulation of PS2 games.

I have heard that I need to buy a SATA HD and it must be 2.5 inches (or else the PS3 won't be able to function.

My question is that is there a negative effect on the PS3 if I buy a HD with storage over 320 GB or with RPM speeds at 7200?

Loading times from the HDD will be a bit quicker if you were to get a 7200RPM HDD. The PS3 will have no problems with an HDD that has 320GB or more.

Is there any possibility that the PS3 could be damaged at the higher RPM speed?

Also, I have been told that choose only between Seagate and Western Digital. Is there a reason for this?

Hard drive quality. Mine has a 6 year old 120gb Seagate from an old macbook and runs like a charm.

It actually was suggested by this article:

That I should only choose one of the two. I just am thinking that maybe over 320 GB is too much? I mean, what is a 500 GB 2.5" SATA 7200 RPM HD going for these days from WD or Seagate that is reasonable? I saw its about $100 for 320 but I don't know what it is for 500 and I only researched 5400 RPM after somebody told me that 7200 could cause the PS3 to overheat.

You can use any hard drive that is a 2.5" laptop SATA drive. You are not limited to what they show there.

Just checking and doing my due diligence. Although I am also nervous I bungle up the actual installation of the new HD :nervous:.

Just make an extra folder to make it easy. You just select that folder and it will dump the image files there. Then when you restore the image you just select the backup from the external. As long as the external is in the FAT32 format your PS3 will have no troubles.

For a hard drive I would say try this one. It's selling for a good deal with the $20 off code right now and it's hard to pass it up.

Yeah and I figured out why. One of the 3 distribution centers for New Egg is located 30 miles from me. They charge the tax in the 3 states where the warehouses are, California, Tennessee and New Jersey.

Getting a 7200 rpm HDD might give you faster speeds because if the HDD isnt a 5400 rpm there are potential compatibility issues as you wont even be able to use your ps3. You're also going to want to buy an external HDD formatted to fat32 to be compatible with your ps3 unless you want to start from scratch. Also, 320gb is kind if overkill unless you download a LOT of stuff from psn in a short amount of time. You might want to upgrade due to a system failure in the future so it would probably be safe to buy a 150-200gb hdd. There's a video somewhere on YouTube about replacing your ps3 hdd that has lots of useful information.
