For those of you who actually like the GTA series and own/played Saint's Row let me ask you the following (comparing it to GTA3/VC/SA):
  • Is it any good?
  • What's the same?
  • What's different?
  • What's better?
  • What's worse?
  • Is there more miscellaneous things to do that aren't game required missions?
  • Does it use XBL?
  • Would you recommend it?

Well, as a former GTA fan, I hope to help the best I can.

...To be honest, Saints Row is a pretty decent game if you are looking for a GTA clone on the 360. At best, the game is pretty in looks, and the controls are pretty reasonable overall. But I found the game to be somewhat boring, pretty generic, and overall, just not worth the cash.

I don't know if it is because I'm bored with the genre, or what, but I was pretty passive about the whole thing. It is a good game in itself, pretty much everything you would expect for a GTA title in the "next-gen" segment, but the best way I can describe it is "meh."

...I'll still be playing my old-school copies of GTA3 and Vice City, both of which are still the gold-standards in the genre...

I really really enjoyed the single player in Saints Row. At first I really did not expect much of it but it was way better than I ever imagined. I had around 100 hours to complete the single player 100% and every side mission in the game. It was a very enjoyable and challenging experience. There are a lot of things that are similar but a lot that are different. The multiplayer pretty much sucked bad and I didnt put much time into it besides the 2 co-op missions. After that I lost complete interrest in the multiplayer.
The graphics are very nice, the cars handle quite well, the cars and your character can be customized with a variety of ways. If you can find the game for cheap it is definetly worth beating. Just beat all the side missions and everything else and it will keep you busy for around 100 hours.
You cant fly helicopters or drive boats like in GTA but its still a great game.
There is also a thread about this game over here https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=74979&highlight=Saints+row

The only real problem with Saints Row compared to GTA is that it had a crappy narrative. The gameplay is essentially cut 'n paste of GTA, with a few things slightly more polished and a couple things take out. The game was still fun in itself, but after a while it loses the push to actually do the missions. GTA had the storyline to help propel the carnage, but Saints row falls off far sooner because you feel no real reason to do the things you are doing after they stop being fun.

Nonsense. It is just that the true gold standard wasn't played by anybody.
