Sorry if this post is out of place. My question is this. Im playing GT5P on a Sony Bravia using an HDMI cable on 1080i for the first time. After years of playing and being used to what the cars looked like, I was peed off a little when I first hooked up the cable. I'm amazed at the clearness of it but the screen is stretched or something and the cars look like eggs on wheels. I've been through the options on my TV and PS3 and cant seem to cure it except by switching back to 480. One would think 2 Sony products would be compatable in every way. Am I missing something or what? It also won't let me choose 1080p , it goes black even though my TV booklet says its capable. Any help is very much appreciated.

1080i,, when I select 1080p on my ps3 the screen goes blank for 20 seconds. It says it will do this if the resolution is not suppported by my tv. I did buy my cable on ebay pretty cheap but it says 1080i or p supported.

EDIT : I looked at my book again and it actually doesnt say 1080p only 1080i. Bummer,, that on top of feeling dumb. Stupid Sony,, why no 1080p on my set?

Thanks spy

No problem,

You must have an old-ish Bravia than ,or not a full-hd version...
Does it support 720p?...should be better than 1080i if i am not mistaken...

My old Bravia spits out "1080p" just fine.

Looks exactly like 720p. Oh well, that's fine for it's small size.

Anywho, switch it to 720p, see what happens.

It is an older Bravia. I've had it proably 2 years. Just got the HDMI cable though. It does support 720p though. So thats better or just as good as 1080p? I tried 720p and I agree it looks great graphics wise but they still look taller in height and shorter in length than in real life IMO . Now I just gotta decide if I want to tough it out till I'm used to it or switch back to 480. Thats the only thing that makes them look right aspect wise. Whats the BIG difference between 480 and 1080p anyway ? I notice its zoomed in on the GT5P but everythings zoomed out on PS XMB bar or whatever its called ( when you push the PS button). If I go back to 480 , what will I really be missing out on anyway? Thanks everybody!
Heres my options: 480 , 720p , 1080i. Which should I choose in you alls experience?

I've had my Bravia for about a year and a half. Mine has monitor position and stretch adjustments, I'd look for that and see what you can do. Say you get that resolved, I'd say out of 480p, 720p, and 1080i; I'd say to see the true beauty of GT5P, keep at least 720p. It'll be fine in any resolution, though.

32 inch. Its weird cause when Im using satelite TV as my imput it lets me switch between zoom and aspect full wide etc. but with PS3 as the selected imput those options are blacked out and non functional. I'm gonna take your opinion and stick with 720p. It looks great,, its just years of seeing the cars shaped a certain way thats now changed I gotta get used to. Thanks guys

To the human eye there is bugger all difference between 720p,1080i,1080p. Especially 1080i and 1080p.

The main factor with your tv will be what resolution your tv/monitor is and not whether it is capable of accepting a 1080i or 1080p input. Did you notice I said capable of accepting a 1080 input. I am guessing your tv is probably a 1024 x 768 res monitor and not a full 1920 x 1080 res monitor (Full High def). As such your tv manual states that it can accept a 1080i signal (some 1024 X 768 tv's can accept a 1080p signal). This doesn't mean your tv can "display" a 1080 signal as your tv would need 1080 horizontal lines to do so. Your sony is however, able to see the 1080i signal and convert it using it's "Engine" to your native resolution (which is probably 1024 X 768) and then display it on screen. Through this conversion process done by your tv I think that is probably why it may be looking stretched.
Everyone should remember that although your tv may be able to accept a 1080 signal, doesn't mean it can display a 1080 signal(only 1920 X 1080 res tv's can do this). Also there are two different forms of high def tv, old ones (>2yrs old) can display up to 720p (such as the one spoken of), and new ones that can display "Full High DEF" with 1920 X 1080 res monitors.
I hope this has helped and not confused people more.

Your problem is that you got used to a 4:3 signal being displayed on a 16:9 screen.

I remember the salesman suggested the widescreen model over the regular model. There is a sticker on back that says "32 widescreen". I dont know if that makes a difference, I think its the way the screens measured where some are 32 diagnally, widescreen is 32 across I believe , not 100% on that.
Everyone had great insight on my problems but I believe this guy nailed it !

Try another HDMI port on the TV.
I'm using a pioneer plasma and I can connect my ps3 at 1080p on 1 hdmi and not the others. Weird.
