Question on trucks and extra seats.

Does anyone know if it's legal to bolt a seat in the bed of a pick up truck and add seatbelts and let someone ride back there?
I have to drive up north with my truck and my son and 2 friends of his are comming. It's going to be cramped with all of them in the front. It's either that or I will have to leave one behind.
Any info would be appreciated.

Hmm I am sure this is a local state issue, but I don't think its illegal. Isn't that what a jeep is? Of course one could agrue about the role bar above your head. I swear I have seen people that have custom trucks with seats in the back. Its a good question, and I did nothing to help you answer it.

You might just want to rent a van if you can, I don't know if it would be legal or not. It seems it might not for safety reasons.
 
I'm pretty sure its legal the older Broncos are like that.
 
You guys have to remember that Jeeps, and Bronco's came from the factory like that. They didn't just come with two seats up front, and have the owners bolt in a couple more out back.

I'm guessing it's probably not legal, but who knows?:confused:
 
I would imagine seatbelts are the real issue... but most DMVs take a dim view of modifying cars and trucks, where safety is concerned.

Simply bolting it through the sheetmetal bed is not enough... you'll need to get through the crossmember at the very least. The seatbelts need to be anchored securely in the same kind of location.
 
I figured. I've seen many people do much stupider things, though.
 
As second hand gossup, I was told this exact thing is legal in California (Seat belts were the operative word).

What would You know about Me? If you think bolting a bench seat into the bed of your truck is a good, cheap idea, then go right ahead.

Put in a roll bar, bolt the seat belts and seat into the frame, etc. That all ought to be REAL cheap.
