As we all know, PSN is down and it might end up being quite a while before it's back, BUT, is it not possible for PD/Sony to release updates via direct D/L from their site to our PC's and from their to USB?

For system updates I know you can, but for the game... im not sure.

No, not on USB, but they can still distribute updates like normal. Shift 2 got a patch a few days ago.

Normal as in, start up the game and it tells you that you need to patch so you download it. I guess it isn't part of the PSN service. It makes sense, as parents may not want their kids playing online, but the kids should still be able to get patches and stuff.

I'd guess those are tied to the PSN, not whatever generic connectivity is required to obtain patches.

yes you can still recieve Patches even if PSN is down. i deleted the Patch on one of my games(UFC 2010) and it prompted me to get the newest verison patch on start up

Because PD and Sony are affiliated. They will perform updates and patches via PSN only.

I think seasonals like Time Trials/GT Academy/Drift are bound to the user driving them, unlike straight race seasonals, and thus they ARE PSN dependant.
