quick question: Unplug/Eject Lexar JumpDrive

I'll put this question in simplest terms:

Windows 2000, trying to unplug/eject my Lexar JumpDrive. I keep getting the "device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." Windows 2000 always gets angry if you start taking stuff out without telling it first. I need this drive out right away, but I don't want to corrupt the files on it. They're important! What's the use of portable memory if you can't take it out?

Obvious question, but you're not accessing the drive while you're trying to stop it are you? Any windows open looking at the drive's contents, moving files to/from it etc?

Could be Explorer at fault here...

Open Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, right click on "explorer.exe" and end it. Then go to the Applications tab, click on "New Task" and type in "explorer". Then try to stop your drive again.

In general, as long as you're not transferring files to/from the drive at the time it's safe to just take it out, but I can see why you want to be safe with important files. I have the exact same drive myself and have never had a problem with it.

No, but I just restarted the computer and popped out the drive. It seems tedious to have to keep restarting it whenver I need to go somewhere with it, but at least its the safest way.
