O and P are close to each other on the keyboard, so I’m assuming pwned was a common typo, and then became a running-joke sort of thing (much in the same way as teh).

I wouldn't be surprised. Nobody uses it as a joke though now, it's just common. Oh wait, so is teh, if you've ever been to an anime forum. (Strange parallel).

Not just anime forums... everyone uses it. It's an old gag.

Right. We don't here, on GTP, as much as when I was with Gaia; "teh" became the norm.
A couple of my friends started saying "teh" in RL after being there.

I think it's from Quake. Type fast or get fragged= teh tipng eror.
And getting pwned is generally regarded as more severe then getting owned.

Actually, I think the term "PWNED" game from a real video game with a typo in one of the popup messages that came up when you got, well, owned. But the name of the game escapes me at the moment.

Funny aside:

A friend of mine at work was talking about a guild he and some other top-level players made in World of Warcraft. They were called "My Little Pwnies", and went around whooping the holy hell out of everything in their path.

Pbe Pcause Ptyping Pwords Pwith Pa Pp Pas Pthe Pfirst Plettar Pare Pcoll.

Ptotally.

Pwned.

I think it stems from the common typo, which is associated with geeks - as is the term "owned".

So, the term is geek, then the spelling is geek.

Same as n00b - the term is geek, so the spelling is geek.

Read the thread before you post, please. :)

I don't really know, but if you type 'pwned' for a google search, the same results will show as if you had typed 'owned.' I werkt for me to an extent.

Also read above. Duke and Skip say it.

(Sorry, it wouldn't kill you. It's only one page.) :grumpy:

Because it was explained about half an hour before you made your post, yet you made it anyway, and with a less factual answer than the several that had already been given.
👍

OK, thanks.

In future I'll refrain from posting if my opinion is similar to people who have already posted. :)

That was just why he was busting your chops. You're definitely NOT a problem child in this area, so don't worry about it.

Don't forget, of course, that qwned is FAR more severe than pwned. And rwned is even worse. It carries on through to zwned - and then, logically, onto aawned.

Don't. Ask.
