Quicktime retardation

Let me first say that this site is great. I've been a GT freak since the first one and only now discovered this place—a shame.

That siad, I'm having a problem watching videos from this site. I'm on a Mac running OSX 10.3.7 and have all my Quicktime updates, but none of the videos will work. I just get a box saying "the compressor needed to play this file is not found..." or that software needed to play is not on the Quicktime server.

Are these Quicktime files PC-only or something?

I think most of them are AVI DivX files, which would require Windows Media Player and the DivX codec, or something else that plays DivX on a Mac, which I've not had the opportunity to check out such things.

This is the wrong place for this thread. But as a fellow Mac user I gotta help out. Look for something on the web called "VLC". It is a media player that will play 95% of videos on this site (and the web in general). Unless you have the right 3rd-party codecs for quicktime it won't play most files. It isn't retarded, but Windows media is.

It may be in Divx, in which case you need to visit divx.com. According to their download page, the divx player is available for mac as well as pc. http://www.divx.com/divx/ You want the one at the bottom that's just divx.

No that won't do it. I have 4 or so third party Divx codecs loaded into my Quicktime and they won't play there. It is the .AVI that gives it more problems.

VLC will play it all. Google "VLC media player 0.8.1" or 'VideoLAN"

Thanks a million Kensei!
I'm on a G5 also & I was wondering, "what's wrong with my QuickTime." The VLC download has totally resolved the problem.

Danke.

Out of curiosity, where does this thread actually belong?
It belongs in the "Computers & Electronics" forum. I'll move it there in a minute... and welcome to another Mac user!
