Hi there.

I really don't know what it possesing me to do this, but why is the :boggled: (or : boggled: ) emoticon not just ":s" instead?

We have :) (or : ) ), :( (or : ( ), :p (or : p ), and :D (or : D ), so following the same protocol of using ":" as sets of eyes (instead of the "=" variety) and the symbol after it representing the mouth, wouldn't it make more sense, as the :boggled: icon has a "s" shaped mouth anyway? Lower case would be used to fit in with the :p (or : p).

On the same token, :indiff: could be ":\" and :eek: could be ":o".

Wouldn't this streemline the emoticon system and rid the site of stray ":s"s , ":\"s and ":o"s?

I'm really sorry I opened this thread.....again, I have no idea why I felt compelled to write in. :s ....er - I mean :boggled: - :sly:.

I wouldn't think so - I only picked out the most obvious ones that people would probably universally agree on - and I don't think XD looks like :sly:

You're right - could be the whole point why not, but the eyes don't look like "X"

I wouldn't have thought so, because iirc it was Jordan who changed all the emoticons on april fools.
 
Don't forget the Christmas emotes too.:D

I don't think :eek: should be :o, because :O is ( : O ), a little confusing.
 
On another forum I visit, sly was ;D before the site got hit by a hacker.

I agree it would definitely make more sense, but, unfortunately, I can't easily change this without having duplicate smilies in the database. Technically, yes, I could run a REPLACE() on the post table in the database, but I'm not sure how long that would take to run on 3.3 million rows and I'm not sure if it would be worth the trouble. I originally named the smilies about 7 years ago, and :s wasn't in my emoticon vocabulary (and to be honest, it still isn't).

It's easy to change the appearance of the smilies by simply uploading a new file - retroactively changing their replacement text is another challenge.
