I don't know if vBulletin has user groups beyond moderator levels, but phpBB does so surely vB has something.

Seems like there could be a way to test people's grammar / spelling / intellect before allowing them to create an account on a web forum. Or possibly add them to certain user groups. A simple 10 question quiz of random questions (pulling from several hundred) would be great. The higher you score the greater your permissions on the forums. Like posts per hour or which sub-forums you have access to. And you could retake the quiz on your month anniversaries. Mix that in with length of time on the forum and you could gradually make it to a more senior level of status and have greater access. Then if you mix in ratings by peers on the forum and base their voting privileges on status I believe you could have a pretty robust system. The guys who have significantly higher status would be able to create / post in forums and threads that no one else can bother with.

I suppose giving read access to everyone would make the members want to increase their status more, so perhaps it would be limited on posting privileges but not viewing.

But just one question. Why am I so bent on increasing the grammatical quality of a forum? I am such a nerd.

Grammar is very hard. If one actually reads the rules, they appear contradictory at best.

For example, the use of the comma in the sentence above may be wrong. Also, it may be correct to say the above sentence and not the sentence above. It may be correct to have used quotations or apostrophes around some of the words and the last sentence, as well as ommiting the and before the but.

As long as it looks readable and isn't leet or looks like a three year old wrote it I think it's ok.

I see where it could help, but I think it's a bit of an extreme measure and would greatly limit the potential of the forums.

Oh, I wouldn't want it here. I think it would have to start with a brand new forum. I guess more than anything I was just wanting feedback.

Sorry to confuse the issue (:

These sentences rock.

This one sucks. ;)

As long as it is understandable, and is not leet or looks like it was written by a three year old, minor grammatical mistakes are all right.

Better?

2,000,000.

Seriously.

The rest of us are just vB hackers.

Actually, if you read the sticky thread at the top of this forum, you will get the answers to your questions.

As Giles already pointed out, member title information can be found in a sticky thread on this forum. A link to the thread can also be found in my signature.

It was a joke ...

Though to combine post count with time duration and possibly forum popularity (as voted by peers) could be an interesting way to asses a member's 'value to the community' and reward them as such.

I knew you were joking ;) Thats a good idea, complicated but good!

Yeah, I mostly just think outloud or type my thoughts rather than make serious suggestions to Jordan. I know most of my ideas are far fetched and difficult to implement, but they get people thinking and I guess that's what I like more than anything, when people start to think how to change things for the better.

At first I thought restriction from certain forums was a bit extreme, if it's only posting restriction I see no harm. For vB some of your ideas sound complicated LM, not much though, and I certainly wouldn't mind toying with this idea a little more.

As I see it, a simple grammar test on its own seems innocent enough so that it wouldn't hinder the potential of the forums, as Jordan pointed out, yet it could help clean up the place from all the lack punctuation and abuse of 'CAPS'.

And thanks Rumple for directing me to this thread.
