Last night after spending massive amount of time tuning, tweaking, & racing the Ford GT, my PS2 suffered a massive stroke. She can no longer read disks, all I get is a disk error message. This may have been the result of an unexpected fall she took when BURNOUT 3 came out. After that she would only work if was placed upright. Sigh, it's been a great 4 years. My ol' PS2 got me though some of the best & worst times of my life. I'm not looking forward to replacing her with the new slim model, I've heard that it has it drawbacks.

I first went over to BEST LIE where I was regretfully told they have been sold out since August & have no clue (what else is new) when the shipment will be. Sony has just cut back on production. I then went over to Waldo-Mart & bought a basic slim line, skinny mini unit for $149.99. (Plenty in stock btw) Thank God they were not trying to bundle pack them. My old unit will be sent to Irving,TX for cleaning & repair after the repair tech gets back from vacation on the 20th. Maybe I'll add an HD Loader to it. From what the reapir tech told me these units are still in big demand. I figure it’s good to have two of them just in case one of them is going to travel.

The slim ps2 has no drawbacks except that it currently does not support the hard drive, because there is no place to put it. Other than that, it works much better than the old ps2. It has faster read times, and it does NOT overheat, even though a bunch of people say it does.. They're just going off of what they've heard, as they don't have a slim ps2.

I DO have a ps2, however, and it runs great! The built in network adapter is a biig plus, too! Nothing like playing GT4 via XLink (though it lags pretty hard with high ping-players :yuck: ).

Well I'm sure they DO overheat, ever wonder why it doesn't whistle like a jet like the old ps2, because they took out the interior cooling fan thus enabling it to overheat/or overheat faster. Dats what I beleive anyway.

The only thing that bothers me about the new slim minis is there no power off switch, what is up with that? Sony can't be that cheap or can they?

I to have a PS2 SCPH-3001 R model and i've had it since 2000 which makes it a good 5 years old and i'm scared that its gonna die soon, especially when i get my copy of GT4 it doesn't look in bad shape but i had an incident when i was playing San Andreas for to long, i started to smell burning plastic and smoke so i promptly gave it a 10min break. but when the GT4 enduros come I know my ps2 is finnished. but i know loads of peoples ps2's that have died out long b4 mine so i'm glad its givin me this much enjoyment up 2 now.

I had mine for nearly 5 years and all that went wrong was just that it took a bit longer for it to read the disks. :odd:

I got rid of it a few months ago though, my nephew's PS2 suffered the same fate as WJ's so I sold him mine.

You people don't listen. It DOES NOT overheat. I've played it for MANY an hour, and it barely got hot whatsoever. It was slightly warm, but i bet i could crack it open and touch the cpu chip inside and it will not be much higher than body temperature.

They wouldn't sell a product that overheated after excessive gaming, because obviously gaming systems are made to be played for more than 20 minutes. I play mine on average about 6 hours + a day and it barely gets warm. Even with constant disk reading from san andreas.

My PS2 is on it's way to the grave too unfortunately....Before I have to play any game I have to use a lens cleaner disk and sadly it's not cause the lens is dirty its to get the laser centered and warmed up then it will play fine... but it has lived a long good life its also a 30001 model bought it the first day it was available to buy in the U.S. I think when it dies I will buy a new slim model and send this one in for a day at the spa and get her a new laser and a good cleaning...when she return I will retire the slim model for lan play only it's just not right replacing her I don't have the heart

I freakin hate the PS2. I have only had mine about 1 1/2 to 2 years and it is playing up already. I have had my N64 since launch and that still works perfectly. The only reason I am keeping the POS is to play GT4. :grumpy:

Since sony had a class action lawsuit against them for PS2's that have the Disk Read Error, you can call them up and they will fix your PS2 for free, even if it is from launch day. Mine is a 30001 model from 10/26/00, and mine was messed up, so I called them the other day, and told them I got the DRE. They'll ask you a few questions to which your answers should be obvious. The only thing you have to pay for is the shipping to their facility.

Hiya! :D :embarrassed:  Meow! (='.'=)

Sorry to hear about your PS2. :(

I would recommend getting the slim PS2. 👍 Like some said, IT WILL NOT OVERHEAT!!!! :embarrassed: 👍 Some people just get a bit scared when they feel the slim PS2 and find it warm on the surface. Trust those who have it like me and the others....IT WILL NOT OVERHEAT. If you are still concerned about the heating, buy a fan and let it blow on it! 👍
