R.i.p. Ps2!

Well today my PS2 died...after 4 years of service! I paid 575$ for it and after four years it stops working. I took it apart before to raise the lense so I could play GT4 now it doesn't read any disc at all! It says insert a PS2 format disc, oh well I'm in the market for a new one. But should I get the new slim down one or the original one. I heard the slim one overheat faster that wouldn't help me with GT4 thats for sure I also heard they aren't that great at reading the discs. Anyways I could use anybody's input thanks!!!!!

Buy the new one. It doesn't get that hot, it costs exactly the same as the old model, and is freaking cool.

You can't beat online play either. Even if it sucks on consoles. But hey, it's free.

Ya I know what you mean about PS2's blowing up. Mine did last night, the disc drive seized and broke eating a DVD alive.

Was it an old model?

I ask because I might be in the market for a new PS2. Mine is no longer loading GT4. I just got done with getting this one fixed less than siz months ago. I don't want to buy a slim PS2 if that one has problems too.

Ya mine was the oldest US model, I got it on the US release day for PS2. Anyways I picked up a slim line PS2 and it works great. It's so small compared to the other one it surprised me when I opened the box. The slim line now plays my Blue Back Discs and PS1 games that my old one didn't. Plus I think the new one is internet ready but I can't figure it out since I'm a failure with technology.

The new PS2 does not have heating problems. It gets warm, but it wont set on fire like the XBOX.

Wow! you had an Xbox catch on fire...??

Didn't think so. My PS2 (regular one with fan) gets warmer than my Xbox ever has...but have had no problem with either of them.
I say pick up a new slim one Nathanisking, and for $10-$20 you can get a two-year replacement policy.

The power cord on early Xboxes were faulty and could set things on fire.

Yeah, I already have a new cord. But it melted the plug in the xbox. Too much current allowed to flow through. The packet I got from Microsoft said it was a fire hazard, and could potentially cause a fire... I don't think there ever was a fire however.

Anyway,
Get the new slim PS2. Progressive scan playback alone is worth it.

If you're a retard and set them in places with 0% ventilation. I've never even felt warm air comming out of mine, let alone it catching on fire. And what's with all these problems arising in PS2's all of a sudden? I've only noticed in the past 6-9 months-ish that they're all going screwy. Maybe they have an expiration date or something?

All you need to do is pop in the startup disc, save a configuration file on the memory card, plug in an ethernet cable, pop in an interet-enabled game and you're good to go.

I'd say 4 years is an awfully good innings. As opposed to about a year for my first PS2. I've had my second for around a year and it seems fine so far. Touch wood. Damn I probably jinxed it now!!

A Sony rep I spoke with yesterday says so otherwise. He said they have had a lot of complaints of it overheating. They suggest to play no more than three hours. Stop me from buying a new PS2.

HAHA Set on fire like the X Box! Hilarious, oh but wait. Didn't the first Gen PS2 not only have Laser problems, but it had power chord problems because one of the maneufacturers decided to save a buck or two and get cheap powerchords! Same problem the Dreamcast had. Oh Sony, you sly fox you.

You never heard of the horror stories, when kids got burnt and stuff like that because the XBOX started on fire? I remeber on a different forum, i guy wrote that he was playing in the dark, then turned on the light, and noticed that there was smoke all over. He had a faulty cord, like most of the XBOX's do.

Thats BS. My PStwo runs cooler than my old style one did. It never gets more than luke warm and its on 24/7.

The store where I work has had the slim PS2 installed in a glass case with the games, and it has been on 24/7 for roughly 6 months. Still works perfect. The older models 30001 and 50001 would have problems after only a few months, usually with DRE's though.
