Race riots in Australia "affect safe tourism image"

It is really bad for the Australian image. I'm quite ashamed really.

If they had a problem with what was happening on the beaches they could have at least had a discussion or debate or something.

But what's really bad, people weren't just bash people who were looking for a fight. This Middle Eastern man was just walking down the street and got bashed. Sure, if two ethnic groups want to go hammer and tong, then hell, let them. But leave the innocent parties out.

Now, this may sound racist, but it's not my intention. A couple of months ago, we had to cast a vote on what we wanted our final school year emblem to be, all the students designed them and what not. Now what really pissed everybody off was that an emblem that had a picture of an Australian Flag and a Kangaroo with a Cricket Bat won by a major amount. However, we weren’t allowed to have it, because it would offend certain ethic groups (We had a lot of Middle Eastern and Asian originated students at my school). A lot of people were very upset about this, especially when some students were saying "It would look a lot better with a Lebanese flag on it" and "**** Australia, I'm not wearing that ****".

I'm not advocating or happy about what happened, all I'm saying is that if you come to a country you have to be prepared to follow some of the traditions and things. I wouldn't go to America and say "Those stars would look a lot better in the pattern of the southern cross".

I've got many friends from different backgrounds, and all of them would agree with me. This kind of thing is not on.

I agree with that, however these race riots just show how racist many who live in my shire (Sutherland) are. People on my MSN list have names like, 'YER AUSSIE PRIDE' etc...When really the riot at Cronulla was just an excuse for racist attitudes.
Hundreds of people targeting others on the basis of their ethnicity is just wrong, and the police here just are too underpowered to stop these riots.

"Youths?"

"Middle Eastern looking?"

Muslims.

There, I said it. Let's see if the Mainstream Media can match my bet.

Not necessarily, there are quite a few Christian Lebanese here in Australia. :) And also the crowd didn't just attack Lebanese, they attacked Greeks, Italians, Portuguese...anyone that looked different from them.

I can't believe people are actually applauding the march that occurred this weekend, it really does make me angry that Australia is such a racist country.

I heard there were quite a few ethnic gangs 'operating' in that area, and while I don't condone the actions, I think they really were trying to 'claim back' their beaches.

There was a bit on the telly tonight - followed a Channel 9 reporter and cameraman a few hours later after the beach incident. They ran into a group of 200+ 'middle-eastern' people who kicked the **** out of the cameraman and knocked some of his teeth out. I think it's safe to say that they knew the cameraman was not involved in the riots earlier so what was the motive for bashing him?

I admit, I don't know the full story leading up to the riots (like a lot of people in Australia I bet), but I doubt this was just out of the blue. Tension would have been building for some time, and I doubt this tension merely came from the 'presence' of these people in that community - there is likely to be more to it. The problem should have been dealt with when it was just tension and not allowed to progress to this stage.

Well it seemed as if half the crowd there were there to protest against the bashing of the lifeguards, however the other half were there to start fights with anyone, and use the bashing as an excuse to show their (true) racist side...'Go back home wogs' I saw one man say on the tele...really disgusts me.

I agree with you Chris however the police here are severely underpowered and really only have batons and capsicum spray as protection against the crowds. Quite hard to enforce peace with a small bottle and plastic baton.

And no I don't endorse the actions of the Lebanese at Maroubra at night, however I can say I am very angry at what happened just 10 minutes away from me on the weekend.
I am quite ashamed to live in the Sutherland Shire and also be Australian after what happened.

Why is E.T. the first thing that came to my mind? :yuck:

I see the Lebanese (or Middle Eastern people - I can't be sure of who was in the crowd) went on their own spree last night.

Broken windows in cars and buildings, beaten cars and reports of shot fired.

Doesn't really help their cause much does it. :indiff:

Still, lets hope this can all come to an end soon and everyone can learn to get along - no country needs this sort of thing at all, and especially not at this time of year.

Well there's a text message going around calling the Lebanese to go to Cronulla this weekend. If the Lebanese do show up Cronulla will probably become a warzone. :(

The frightening thing was that there appeared to be an element of organised white supremacists amongst the mob. The "ethnic cleansing" t-shirts and anti multicultural leaflets were very disturbing.

Crazy eastern states with your violence and hate. relax.

Vonie
Well, I was planning to go to Australia, but now, I'm not so sure.

Come to Queensland 👍

Gold Coast....Sunshine Coast..... Whitesunday's

Much better weather than 🤬 Sydney anyway 👍

Australia is a massive country and just because riots in Sydney doesnt mean everywhere else is like that also ;)

So, how are things shaping up for tonight?

Anyone nearby hear any rumblings of similar antics tonight, or notice a heavy Police presence in the area?

Very disheartening... to think France and Australia were often considered the best examples of multiculturalism... and it's all come to this.

I think it's time someone invented the "gene-bomb". Infect everyone so that the next generation of babies look like Inuits. Nobody hates them, right?

We still are, this is only one part of quite a large country. It's wrong what's going on down there and it almost makes you feel ashamed of being Australian but I don't think the Lebonese went about this the right way.

Yeah, exactly.

If you're really worried just make sure you have a Croc or a Dingo by your side.

Does Australia have the highest percentage of lightweights throughout their population?

Seems to me like the walabies can't hold their booze.

What the hell is wrong with you guys over there? They just said on the news there's talk of another "race riot". Someone wrote 100% Austrialian power in the sand.

Last night, about 10-12 vans full of lebanese youths unloaded in the town and started smashing cars and windows with baseball bats.

Some people sure know how to help a situation...

You know what's funny. They say Aussie pride, but if I were to go there they wouldn't care.

Seems that everyone is ok with the Asians lol.

C'mon guys... the gene bomb! Inuits!!!

Ask anybody to name a race they hate... Whites, Negroes, Arabians, Asians, Indians, Jews, etc... they're all on that list... but I bet not one damn person will think of Eskimoes!

Think about it, we'd all be short, so we could fit into smaller cars (saves gas).

We'd be smaller, and eat less.

We'd probably kill all the whales, though... but then, we wouldn't be at war anymore.
