ABOUT THE EVENT

The racemax.gt GT7 Tuner Battles Super Lap Event at Tsukuba was created to recognize the GT7 tuning community. The event gives GT7 tuners and drivers the opportunity to compete against each other for prestige and cash prizes in a format that will require both a high level of tuning skill and driving ability to be competitive.

FORMAT

The event is in Time attack format; participating drivers will have four attempts—or “sessions”— to record an eligible lap time. A session comprises a total of 2 laps: 1 warm up lap, and 1 flying lap. The lap time of the “flying lap” is the lap that will be recorded. The fastest flying lap made across all four attempts will be used for determining winners.

TRACK

The event will be held at Tsukuba Circuit.

EVENT SCHEDULE

The event will be held 18 through 20 November 2022. Registration opens on 15 October 2022. See the REGISTRATION AND ELIGIBILITY section of this post for further information about registering for the event. The event lobby will be open on the following dates during the following time windows:
  • 18 November 2022 from 5PM to 9PM EST (10PM to 2AM UTC)
  • 19 November 2022 from 1PM EST to 5PM EST (6PM EST to 10PM UTC)
  • 20 November 2022 from 1PM EST to 5PM EST
Drivers can reserve up to 4 time slots upon being selected as a driver for the event. Reference Appendix A — Registration Time Slots for additional information on time slots available. See the REGISTRATION AND ELIGIBILITY section of this post for further information on reserving a time slot.

PRIZES

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three fastest times in the event, with 50% of the prize going to the tuner and 50% of the prize going to the driver. It is possible for one tuner to win a share of all three prizes.

The prizes are as follows:
  • 1st: US$100 ($50 for Tuner, $50 for Driver)
  • 2nd: US$50 ($25 for Tuner, $25 for Tuner)
  • 3rd: US$25 ($12.50 for Tuner, $12.50 for Driver)
Cash will be sent to winners via PayPal no later than 7 business days following the conclusion of the event.

REGISTRATION AND ELIGIBILITY

The following sections detail the registration process and eligibility requirements for tuners and drivers.

Tuners
Establish a name for your garage and register for the event here by simply indicating your interest in joining the event. Then find up to three eligible drivers from the Event Drivers Pool—each tuning garage can select up to 3 drivers for the event. Tuners are eligible to drive in the event and fill one of the three allowed driver slots. Drivers must be selected from the Event Driver Pool. Driver selection is first-come-first serve.

Drivers
Register to the Event Driver Pool here for an opportunity to be selected as a driver for the competing garages.

If selected, reserve 4 time slots. Reference Appendix A — Registration Time Slots and the Registered Drivers Table when selecting a time slot. Additionally, reserve a number. Reference the Identification section of this post for further information on selecting a number.

The faster car on sport soft with maxed settings will be fast for sure and dominant car , but not the most enjoyable car , even if it'll be a 4WD car for sure.
If it's a time attack event , i don't understand why so much eligible cars whitout a chance to compete.... or i'm missing something ?

Hi Praiano,

The eligible cars are simply that: eligible—no guarantees they'll be competitive. It's up to the tuners to find the balance between sheer power and drivability ;) In a format like this, slow and steady could very well win the event. Each driver will only have 4 attempts to record an eligible lap time.

No power and weight regs bother me a bit too.
Wouldn't that obviously give an edge to the lucky few who have been awarded the special parts like ultra-high RPM turbo, S Bore-up etc...?

It certainly could, and that's ok in this format. it's a US$200 prize purse—nothing to lose, all to gain.

Also consider the odds of both a tuner and their three drivers having the same upgrades available. The tuner may have the parts, and is eligible to compete, but the tuner only gets 4 attempts at setting a lap record. So whilst in theory, yes, exclusive tuning parts could give a team an advantage, in practice, the advantage will only gained through extraordinary luck.

I'd personally love to see a built VR38DETT-GR-R-NISMO swapped 180SX take down the R34s, NSXs, EVOs, STIs, et cetera—if a tuner can manage to get 946HP and 584 ft-lbs of torque down to the road on street tires, they probably deserve to win. A stock EK9 would probably run laps around the 180SX.

You know I figured there'd be a lot of interest on this, especially considering the $200 cash prize. I'm curious why no one else is signing up. Is it because there's too many cars to choose from, should it have just one car to pick from with very specific HP, weight and such?

I do have a couple tunes ready for this, I'll try and post them this week.

Yes, prizes are on the table. Still going to need to record 3 valid lap times to get the full prize purse though. And if Jerome fills one of his driver slots, he can win the whole prize purse.

I would like to see more participation though. So totally open to discussing the event format and getting feedback. I'd rather not change the core format of this event though because I'm trying to imitate the real super lap battle format, where the only real limitation is the tire.

I also want to keep tuning pretty much wide open because it'd be a nightmare from a moderation perspective to verify everybody's cars are using legal parts etc. Plus, we've assessed that the advantage one could gain by using a special part is pretty marginal.

I am open however to discussing changes to the eligible car pool though. I understand a 400HP Integra is not going to compete with a 600HP R32. I also understand that a 900HP 240sx is going to get smoked by that 400HP Integra.

From my research, assuming the same driver for each car, the R34, R33, R32, EVO, WRX, and RX7 will likely be the most obviously competitive cars of the bunch. But I didn't want to just remove the civics and other cars from the equation.. Maybe a K swapped civic could be competitive.. IDK because I don't have all the swaps. Maybe an LS swapped Miata can be competitive, IDK. Maybe an NSX with super parts could compete with the R34.. idk?? On paper, the power to weight ration of the GT-R swapped 240sx seems like it could be dominant, but it's impossible to get that power to the ground, so it's actually a really slow car.

So those unknowns are part of the reason we've left things pretty open in terms of car choice and tuning.

But yeah, lets open this up to discussion. I'd like the feedback. I'd like to run the Tsukuba event annually, but I'd also like to potentially run this same format at other tracks as well throughout the year. So yeah, feedback would be good for planning future stuff as well.

Cheers,

Max

Banning 4WDs would open the competition up, suddenly. While some of the cars are cool, I think they will be superior.

I've put a lot of thought into it and tbh there's not simple answer to balancing things. I honestly think the current format is as close as we're going to get to allowing tuners to do their thing.. I'd maybe consider banning the R34, but I haven't test the R34 so I don't even know if it's really any faster than an R32.

We can try to work out a class format.. But it wouldn't be as simple as doing it by drivetrain, otherwise I believe the RX7 and NSX's will surely dominate the RWD class and we're back to the same problem of everybody using the same car and not having variety.

Across-the board horsepower and weight restrictions won't really balance anything out either.. Power to weight doesn't really matter if everybody is using street tires. Traction is king here, so AWD cars will dominate regardless of power or weight restraints.

The only way we could really balance stuff out and get a variety of cars competing would be to apply weight and power specifications for individual cars with purpose of ensuring each car is setting a lap time that's in pretty close proximity to a target time. This defeats the purpose of having various tuning garages enter cars if their only goal is to tune a car to be within .500 of 57 seconds though.

I'd rather see 4 tuning garages compete to tune the same car and see who's tune is best than a balanced variety of cars where tuning skill doesn't matter.

Thoughts?

I've gotta withdraw my entry unfortunately guys, as I've recently lost my job and need to find another one. GL to those who enter!
