In www.racer.nl you can find a great car simulation, whose handling is (almost) as demanding as in real life. In the same website, you can find all the tracks and cars you want.

Download it if you want and tell me you opinions.

yup, there are already many threads about racer.
contrary to belief, pressing the search button will not cause colon cancer.

Yep theres a few other threads on this game but the last one hasn't been posted in since August 2005. Anyway I haven't tried racer in a long time and there wan't a hell of a lot of content back then. But I just lost track of it and got deep into RFactor, Live for speed and GTR instead. I'll have to give it a whirl sometime though.

Its not worth it L4S, seriously, awful wheel support..if theres any support at all. Bad gfx compared to rfactor and GTR, and they try to say its realistic but its just not..

Well I have just enjoyed thrashing a 1968 Mustang round a China tarmac rally stage in RFactor and tomorrow I'm going to do a spot of Pikes peak hill climbing. I can't see myself dropping RFactor any time soon and things look very bright with the number of mods being made for it.

The pikes peak hill climb is fantastic. I must have done it 15 times in the Renault 5 group F. Try it in an F1 car too.

Im currently playing GP4, 50% races 2006 mod.

Holy crap. I guess I should just learn to tolerate the F1-2002-based menu system and physics and grab RFactor.

I tried Racer, but I can't control the car and the only track I can get to work is the one that comes with it. I belive the newest one has a lambo.

From,
Chris.

How do you put in new cars? :D
Go to racer.nl and on the left is says 'cars and tracks' and has two websites. The second one i think is better, racer-xtreme. Then find the car or track you want and download it. Unzip the file, and place the folder in the appropriate directory of the racer.

Which directory is that? :dunce:
When downloaded from rapidshare (from everywhere actually) racer needs no installation. Simply you open the racer folder (unzip the downloaded file) and then 'data' and paste the track or car folder you downloaded in the 'track' or 'car' folder. I believe you understand. If not, send me pm.

Sorry for bump, but I am a racer fanatic. The best, i mean THE BEST website is this -http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=111.

Pretty much everything you need, all the cars, tracks, tutorials, ANYTHING!

I remember seeing something about this game on this site but I couldn't for the life of me find it.

LINK

It looks pretty interesting, an open-source (kinda) racing engine based on user tracks and cars. I want to know what people's experience with this has been.

Been around for years. I tried to get into it, but trying to add cars & such started to become a pain, and the game just did not like my system.

Yeah I've posted about this game like, everywhere actually. I've posted some of my creations in places, because I posted screenshots. Just a matter of finding them...

Took some new photos of my prized Legacy which I've tuned.

@Turbo Lag
before i download it, is it easy to make cars or change their appearance or whatever
do you do all of that in-game? (i.e. not in some form of 3d modelling software)
Cheers

It's quite easy really. It's just a matter of a little common sense and a bit of experience. The texture files come as DDS. files which can be opened directly by Photoshop with a plugin, or with less quality without a plugin. You can then simply edit the pictures, save and keep trying. The game's data is really open to people to mess around with since it's a user-content game. Tuning the performance and the actual car is tricky. Each car has a configuration setting (.ini), and all the car's performance and statistic data EXCEPT the torque curves are in there. For my car, I tuned the torque curves a little, screwed around with the suspension, and did a hell of a lot of visual work on it. I've also edited many, many other cars.

Adding objects and parts to the car needs a modeler though...something I've yet to try.

Btw, if you want to try my car out in the game, hit me up with a PM and I'll send it in a .RAR file. :)👍

I also recommend reading Racer's 'documentation' part of the site, it's definitely worth a read even if you don't play the game, it gives you a good understanding of many aspects.

ahh ok
sounds emmm... difficult to start with
if i try it ill probably get the hang of it :dopey:
cheers for all the info
ill probs download this tomorrow

What would you compare the physics to?

It's actually quite good, but there's still many many bugs. The FFB on wheels only work 1 in 2 times for some reason, but you usually won't notice it. The physics are a bit hard to compare to since a lot of the cars haven't been given the perfect specs and everything. The game uses pacejka physics for the tyre slips fyi.

That's very good to know. I really want an open worldish type racing game with good physics so I'm guessing this is a good place for me to start. Is there a maximum size to the maps you can build, because I would like to make a city-like grid and keep expanding as I have time.

Most tracks are quite small, atleast the one's already made. Remember this game is rather about expansion than racing. Give it a go though, but I still recommend you try something smaller to begin with so your city might be a good starting point.

Anybody still into this? I finally got the chance to mod my Legacy's engine notes. I got some really nice samples from TDU, but Racer dosen't want to play sounds which are too high a pitch.

Anyone else modded any cars?

WHAT IS RACER?
Racer is a free car simulation project, using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations). The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL for rendering.
It attempts to do well at the physics section, trying to create life-like cars to emphasize car control and doesn't cut back on realism in the interest of fun. If you've played Grand Prix Legends from Papyrus, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Its great, I played it about a year ago and there is a very large amount of tracks and car to download.

Ah how did I forget to take a video of my Legacy on this game.

Here it is.

Give it a second to process. :)
