Racing Etiquette question

When racing online, and flying the GTP prefix, I do my best to race cleanly and be courteous to others on the track, even if they are behaving poorly themselves. If I make a mistake (a not too uncommon occurrence) I'll take myself out rather than another, or if I do bump someone off track, I'll wait for them to rejoin before resuming.

However, there's one situation that has me a bit vexxed: the chain reaction.

If I'm sandwiched between two cars under heavy breaking, and the car behind me slams into me, causing me to bump the car in front, causing them to go off, am I supposed to wait for them to return to the track ahead of me before resuming the race?

I mean, in this case the driver in the middle isn't the driver at fault, but I can guarantee that the driver who went off would think otherwise.

I suppose its up to you really. Personally, if I felt that the person that went off would be better competition than the people ahead, than I wait for them to get back on the track, after all, I'm playing online for the fun of racing people, not just winning.

Also, I think that people who get punted off should be careful before blaming any one person for being punted off, precisely because of these situations.

I don't think that's quite true :) A good, hard fought clean race is of course fun, regardless of placing

But i'm sure most of us would rather win than not :D
 
I've been the "pin-ball" a few times myself. If I know the person I bumped off because I was hit from behinde, I'll wait because I know usually we'll race hard a clean and more and likely work our way back to the front if there is enough time. I think of it as practice...aka "seat time" because I have a feeling GT5 will start keeping stats of sort. Practice makes perfect! Happy racing!
 
I AM IN TOTAL AGREEMENT WITH THAT, IN MY CASE AS A PREVIOUS CONTRIBUTOR STATED, IF I FIND GOOD COMPETITION WITH ANOTHER DRIVER I HAVE NO PROBLEM HAVING OUR OWN PERSONAL CHALLENGE.

MY PARTNER MrElise(US) WHO ALSO RACES UNDER THE ID Barbados246_12(us) & Jjumbo(jp) ALSO SUBSCRIBES TO CLEAN DRIVING AND WE GET VERY ANNOYED WHEN THAT HAPPENS.

BUT WE IN THE END KNOW WHO'S FAST & WHO'S NOT..................

Vaxen, as stated by others, it is really up to you. It is interesting that you bring this up, because the same thing happened to me just today. Earth had checked up big..and Drama-kyd ran into him and I ran into drama kyd. What I did was I waited for Kyd, and Earth. And Kyd waited for me as well.. I think that anytime you are involved in an racing incident you should stop and give back the posistion to the rightful owner and try to pass clean the next chance.

So even though it was Earth's fault for almost coming to a complete stop, we did the right thing. Later we learned that his DFP peddels fail him. Its ok..its not real, even though sometimes we act like it is real in the moment. At least I am guilty for getting on other GTP's cases.

So, even though you are in the accident I think you would give the postion back to the person who you bumped. And so on. So the racer that hit you into the other guy should have stoped for you..ect.

I try not to feel guilty when that happens, but usually I end up feeling guilty anyway. How I handle it kind of depends on my mood and if the driver I got "chain-reactioned" into has been a clean racer. If he was a wall-crawler, for example, I just continue on...
 
there was one time where i was braking for the chicane going up to the final straight i was trying to catch up with the guy infront, i braked late (on the right) because the guy i was trying to overtake was on the left, he probably thought i was going for the take so he moved to the inside where i was...anyway i had gave him the lightest of taps just enough to put two of his tyres on the grass. if he kept the the left and then used the racing line like normal i wouldn't of touched him, i still think this was his fault because i moved off the racing line to minimise the risk of hitting him....it could be argued that it is more my fault but hey.

but yeh, i stop for people if i don't make a clean pass, if have a little side by side touching moment most of the time i give the postition back but depending on the mood i sometimes take the position because in racing this does happen.
 
There is a thing called "racing incidents". Stuff happens you know, and if it's not your fault, just keep going. Everyone here should know that sometimes they're gonna get into incidents where they will end up with the short straw, but you just have to move on. The ability to put that stuff behind you is a sign of a good racer.

Now if it was your fault and you know it, like if you where trying an overzealous passing move, and ended up punting the guy, then yeah maybe you should wait for them to re-pass you before you keep going. There is no damage in this game and usually something like that ends up taking both participants out, or you get hit with a stop and go for aggressive driving.
 
I originally posted this some time ago, but I've come to the following conclusion:

If I caused the wreck or the off, I'll wait. If I was pinballed in, I generally won't wait. The exception is if I'm only interested in racing the guy that went off, in which case I'll wait, not really out of a sense of responsibility, but rather to ensure I have a good race.

But if I believe I'm at fault, you can bet I'll wait.
 
Tricky situation Vaxen. I've been involved in this kind of incident twice and have carried on knowing that it wasn't my fault:tup:

If you're the third person in the line of three, then back off a little or ensure that you enter the corner using a different line:tup:
 
Very tricky indeed. I watched Zabeu and MisterWeary dice it out for almost three laps, nose to tail and I couldn't fit a cigarette paper between them. I was racing like all hell to try and keep up with them, but I didn't want to pinball anyone, so I stayed off their bumpers. Just enough to keep them honest because I didn't need to be that close.

I don't think anyone needs to be that close to 2 racers dicing. It's hard enough as it is without sticking your nose into a battle like that. Either wait until it's clear or watch the spectacle from a respectable distance, hehe!
