Which is easier for YOU?

Whenever I race, I always find myself racing worse when not in the lead. I usually hit the AI a lot, and take corners at angles I wouldn't normally take them at. But as soon as I get the lead, I bust out times that are 3-4 seconds better, and the lead grows real fast. I don't know why this is, I guess it's just easier for me. So now I ask, what is easier for you? Racing in front or in back?

Middle of the pack. I like a good challenge. If the AI stays with me. I drive better. If I'm out in front like 20 seconds. I get bored too quick and then I manage to hit start / exit.

I feel that the AI is actually quite odd.

If you're slightly ahead, they will push your car and do everything they can in order to gain 1st. If you're far away from them (behind or in front) they will race at 'regular pace' and won't try anything too crazy.

Personally I like being slightly ahead. They can play bumper cars with you, :D

If you're having problems in the middle of the pack, you're probably paying too much attention to the AI. Try to pretend the AI isn't there, that may help.

I run faster up the front because then I have nobody to hold me up. With the AI in your way you have to get around them before you can cut out a good lap time.

When I'm catching up I always find myself doing better times, I got more pressure to do good and it seems that I perform well under pressure. When I'm in front I just start drifting all over the place so I voted for behind.

If there is an AI car in front of you, it is human nature to follow the same path as them. This is why sometimes you fly out of a corner because you have good braking/throttle control skills, but since the AI is right in front of you and you are following his path, you bump him in the rear and slow yourself down. This phenomenon is called "VISUAL TRACKING" and it is the same thing that causes people to hit trees and streetlights when they spin out on the road. The general rule is that whatever your eyes are looking at, your hands will subconsciously coordinate themselves to steer you towards it.

Unfortunately, the only solution to your problem is to try to look beyond the AIs, or as previously stated, try to pretend they aren't there. This is tough, though, because the AIs are moving objects that naturally attract your eyes. I experience the same frustration when in 4th or 5th place, always seeming to bump the corners and brake too late and hit the AIs. I used to think I was a poor driver, but once I get out in front, there's no stopping me!

It's obviously easier to drive out front because you're setting your own pace and are not interfered with once you get more than a couple seconds in the lead.

But it's way more fun to be in the middle of the pack, mixing it up with the AI cars, even if it means compromising your lap times a little.

I much prefer to be out front. Now if the AI was any good in GT3 I might prefer differently. If I am going for lap times I'll run in free mode so that isn't the issue. I hate driving with the AI and being rammed off the road or speared from behind by the AI, especially an issue with FR cars with no TCS or ASM. The AI holds it's line no matter what so if you out brake them into a corner and take the line, in a good and legal move, more often than not you will be rammed from behind by the AI.

Not to worry though, in most races the AI is so bad that even an underpowered car is at least a second out from the pack.

Hey,
it's better to start from the front if you really want to win the race. But since I always win anyway:p , I like to start from behind, wait a few seconds at the Start, and then catch up. And when i'm in the pack, I play around with them (push them all over the track and stuff) and at the last lap I overtake all and win the race:p .
You should try it;)

It's a boring game when you're way out in front. It's also a frustrating game when you can't do a thing, and you're driving like mad to catch up to the 5th place car. I'd rather have a chance of winning, and catch all the way up on merit. Also, I've had some great racing that wasn't for the lead.

One thing that bothered me was a win at the Pro FF at Deep Forest. I was racing a full-tilt Acura ITR, and was quite fast. However, the tires were crap. I was catching up another car at a rate of about 2 seconds a lap after my stop. I caught the lead Spoon Civic with a quarter of a lap to go. It felt like a hollow victory, making up 4 seconds on the final lap, even though I hadn't set the best time. I feel the AI allows you one final chance to beat it on the last lap sometimes.

The AI's much more screwy at times: Sometimes it's boosted so you can't catch them without kicking the snot out of it with many mods, and at other times, it's as if they were carrying an ton of ballast. I've had some good racing for 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th place, but I can't think of too many battles for the lead worth savoring in GT3. Sometimes the lead AI car is leagues ahead of the other 4 cars, and it's tough to choose soemthing that allows you to "race" the other 4 cars and still be competitive enough to beat the best AI car for the lead.

GT2's AI were lousy drivers, but at least there was an element of predictability that prevented them from cheating and made for other competitive AI cars. The same AI car didn't always come in 2nd in the same race, for example.

Racing at the front is easier, Catching from the back is more fun. Is it just me or do everyones lap times improve constantly the longer I race.

The middle of the pack, this way you can set your opponent up for a late-race pass, instead of vise versa. Isn't that part of a particular someone's 'theory for fastest driving'?

I do really good when im behind..of course anyone can do really good when there ahead but i can really tear it up when im last and i got a couple of laps left and i know i got a shot! And when i play friends and im behind i get pissed and catch up and win ..this applies for all racing games on X-box or ps2 that i have!! :)

i really love trying ya hardest, its fun on the last lap, ripping it up and getting ya best lap, its a fun way to end the race, even if my types are still alright, i go in with 4 laps left, 1 lap for the outlap and then 2 hot laps!

i run faster from 2nd or 3rd, because it pushes me to go faster to catch up, and surprisingly my times get quicker and quicker.. i love close races though, makes it more interesting than just being out the front by yourself nearly falling asleep.. lol

Where ever as long as I win.I always start at the back, can't be bothered to do practice laps.Being in the pack is good but on harder races the pack is really the first placed car and me.The best for me is making a mistake large or small and busting my balls to win the race.

well, i try and get in front as soon as possible by either forcing my opponent onto a bad line or outbreaking him. In gt3 mindgames dont really work, so theres no real reason to want to stay behind someone. i mean... its not initial d. :) Of course everyone drives better when they are chasing. but i like being in front.
