Radar Detectors... your opinion please!

My friend is looking into buying an ESCORT Passport 8500 X50.

Has anyone had any experience with this radar? What are your thoughts about it? Or do you have any other radar that's "hands down best"?

Thanks for any input, I really appreciate since I'm looking into buying one fairly soon as well :P

These are the things that attract him most about this particular radar:

"The Passport 8500 X50's new "V-Tuned" radar receiver provides extreme range on all radar; conventional and "instant-on" including POP mode, X-Band, and up to 50% more range on the all-important K and Ka bands than the original Passport 8500. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) provides maximum range, with minimum false alarms. "

"Passport 8500 X50's on-board computer can be reprogrammed to detect new radar and laser threats, making it a solid investment. " <-- I think this is something that my friend found to be very interesting.

Thanks everyone!

I don't use a radar detector...been lucky so far, in the 9 months of licensed driving I've never even been pulled over. I think it's because the 323 looks so damn slow...I almost got pulled over by the school cop...I left school and did a flat out 0-65 run(in a 45 or something) in the rain and I passed right by the cop and he pulled out behind me. Ofcourse, I slowed down and acted as the good little driver. He passed me and looked right at me...was pretty funny, I think that he didn't know if he truely saw my car going that fast or if it was his imagination. hehe

Yea, I've been hearing a lot about valentine, but I also heard that it doesnt pick up certain, I think, k, ka bands or something like that

Hell if I know. I got it installed at an electronics place in New Jersey when they put in a DVD player. Like I said, I've got no complaints - but I don't typically get to drive fast enough (it's on a car in Manhattan) to test it.

I got an Escort Solo S2 for my Cobra. Jordan said he had one, and it worked great, and I read some comparison test he linked too, so I bought one.

Just got back from a 3,000+ mile trip to Oklahoma, and back, and I have two new tickets sitting in my car. On highway mode the S2 didn't pick up the radar until I was literally within 2 car lengths of the cop. At first I just thought the Camaro's parked on the shoulder were just regular pewter Camaro's, but as soon as I passed them the detector started screaming at me. It was almost as if the S2 was laughing in my face because it knew I just got busted. I wish I would have brought my V1 with me.

I also wish I would have spent $300 elsewhere.

Sorry for not answering the thread, I was away for the weekend.

Price is not really an issue at this point, as both my friend and I have been saving enough money for this purchase.

I'm just trying to figure out whether ESCORT Passport 8500 X50 is as good or better than Valentine. Now I know that guys that have Valentine are very happy with it and I'm sure they have their reasons, I'm just trying to find out more info that's all.

Thanks to all of you for your inputs!

Odd that you should mention that, Josh, I just thought I had jinxed my own detector after raving about it. Although I haven't got a ticket, I have been extremely dissapointed with it as well. It appears to be line-of-sight, which obviously is completely worthless. I have never got an alert before I saw the source of it. I've even passed about 5 sitting cops on the highway and it didn't even make a chirp!
