I recently bought a new PC mainly to play iracing, but I also have Dirt 3. These are the only games I have tested so far. I have an issue where sometimes the screen will change to a striped grey/black screen, sometimes just for a second and sometimes the whole computer will crash and need to be reset. It happens even on the lower graphics settings, I have read that this card should play Dirt 3 on the higher settings but I'm getting this issue even at Medium. I have also read people are getting this issue quite a lot, is there anything I can do to fix it? PC: Quad core 3.6 ghz, 4 gig ram, Radeon HD6770

Edit: It's a 6770 not a 5770 :)

Edit title to reflect the 6770.

I have been in the Nvida camp since I gave up my X1900XTX crossfire setup so my response is purely non-platform specific.

I would do a clean driver install. Make sure you completely uninstall the old driver before you load the new driver and catalyst software.

You will know it is a clean uninstall because on a reboot your computer will use the Windows Generic Display Driver and it will likely look like crap until you install the ATI Driver.

I would say this could be the easiest fix, and one I would look at before I start tearing into hardware. If you do want to check the hardware side of things:
  • check your connections.
  • with the power off, reseat your graphics card.
  • unplug and replug all graphics connections, include VGA/DVI/HDMI and Power plugs.
  • try a different monitor.
  • heat could be causing issues, how's your temps?
  • could be lack of power from the power supply.

Good luck.

This could be a number of things.

Pako's guide is great, just add one thing to the list. Bring the computer out, put it on the desk where you're using it, and lay it on it's side. Take the side panel off so you can see the graphics card. Watch the fan while it's under load to make sure it isn't failing. if it's failing, heat builds up quickly, causing the chip to act strangely and stop working to cool down. Same thing happens with CPU's, although that isn't the case here.

I think their are some bad 6770's out their.

I worked on a customers PC where it would not load windows but bluescreen as soon as you loaded the ATI drivers(latest or out of date) worked fine with an Nvidia card and its drivers but not the ATI, it had enough power but wouldn't boot into windows.

Pako has said the best things.
