Ralf leaves Toyota (Was it a suprise?)

I think you can count Rosberg out. I believe I read in Autosport that he is happy at Williams.

Besides, why would Rosberg want to jump into the worse car? Williams have 23 constructors points to Toyotas 12, and Rosberg has 15 points to Trulli's 7 and Ralf's 5.

I'd hate to see Rosberg leave Williams, cause I'm a fan of both the driver and the team. (That said if Williams decide to ditch Wurz, I'd hate to see them re-hire Ralf.)

No, by "new challenge" I think Ralf meant finding a drive for next year. That will be a challenge. Or maybe his "new challenge" is finding a way to make himself the twenty-second (as opposed to twenty-third) best driver.

I'm pretty sure Ralf had a falling out with Patrick Head over some matter in what was eventually his last season with the team. I can't see them re-hiring Ralf.

I think Ralf's only chance of a relatively good seat would be at Prodrive, but I'd bet my left pinky that goes to Paffet and De La Rosa.
 
Personally I don't really want to see De La Rosa racing, dunno why. Maybe McLaren should ship Alonso to Prodrive =D

I'd like to see him sign a single-season contract at McLaren.

Look at it this way - he'll have (one of) the best car on the grid so he'll be able to prove his "I'm one of the top three" claim, and since McLaren can't get any Constructors' points, they'll lose exactly squat.

And I suppose that when he doesn't prove his "third-best driver" theory, then we're well shot of him?

How exactly are McLaren supposed to be able to afford Schumacher with his extravagant pay? I mean sure, he's not worth his paycheck, but I don't think he'd be willing to take a salary cut if McLaren were to approach him. Heck, it would probably reinforce his belief of his ability. And with the whole $119 million fine hanging over their heads, McLaren probably won't be on the market for overpaid and undertalented drivers for next year.

It'd suit him perfectly, they'd come at him with an open cheque-book, he'd be the number-one driver by a long shot, his teammate probably wouldn't have a hope in hell of seeing his tail, and at the end of the year can still say he beat his old team in the constructors championship.
 
Ralf to McLaren...no no no...that is just bleeding with wrong-ability. And it's blasphemy to suggest such a thing when McLaren could get someone else who's actually capable of not sucking in a Formula 1 car and worth more than a single season contract.

hang about... are McLaren excluded from next year's constructors too? I thought it was just this year unless their 2008 car looks a bit like a Ferrari.

They need to build a car that is something more than "mediocre" first.
 
And Alonso has the knowledge to provide good feedback and make one of those.

Toyota has the facilities. And with some more money, they might hire some talented guys from other teams.
 
So if Toyota signs Alonso and Todt will be fired at Ferrari and goes to Toyota to built the team up to a world class team:D. Dreams are so awsome.
 
Toyota will never be a top class team. They're so used to making Camrys that they spend half of their R&D budget on optimizing headroom.

But what they - and Honda - need to realise is that you can't run a Formula One team by committee. Take a look at Flavio Briatore and Jean Todt and Ron Dennis and Mario Theissen: all of them have complete control. They're autonomous from the parent company. While they probably report back to Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes and BMW, the company alls them to think, act and behave on their own. Now look at Honda's Nick Fry (I'm using him as an example because I don't know who runs the show over at Toyota); he specifically told the Honda board not to fire or reassign Geoff Willis and they didn't listen to him. Where Honda were poised to make a name for themselves at the end of last year, the Honda board appointed Shuei Nakamoto who removed every decent thing from the RA106 and replaced with with $30 million worth of ballast. And even though Honda have managed to make thier talented drivers look silly and the team's engineers openly state that Nakamoto is out of his depth, Nakamoto's job is secure because the Honda committee won't budge.

It's the same for Toyota. They have the potential and they certainly have the budget, but in five years all they've managed to do is go through drivers - McNish and Da Matta, for instance - like they go through underwear before settling on the curiously quick-quick-slow Jarno Trulli, and Ralf Schumacher, whose head is so big it generates downforce. Toyota have the potential to go places, they just haven't done anything with it because they're run by a committee. Then again, that's a very Japanese way of running a business whereas Briatore, Todt, Dennis and Theissen use a very European model to do things.

I think I've finally solved the mystery of why he's so slow!

Ralf has been wearing too many shirts all this time, which has weighed his car down!

And Redgodzila, we may still see that picture in future if Ral ends up at Spyker or something ...
