Rally and Ovals

Rally is absolutly useless, it's just a checkbox at the back of the cover, because the physics are very inaccurate, and the stages aren't realistic.

I don't particularly enjoy ovals but under the right circunstances and right tracks , it can be fun.

Oval races tend to produce cleaner races because all you need to do is qualify and you're ahead of the rammers. You also can't go faster on the ovals if you're using all of the driving aids.

Not a big fan of ovals, but I think there presence is important in the game, can provide very fun races, specially with tire wear and fuel consumption active.
Northern Island is replica of Bristol Motor Speedway, exactly the same size, and Nascar puts 40 cars racing on it two times every year. The problem is when you put fast cars and players SR B or lower...
Blue Moon is very fun to race in road legal cars, with road tires and lots of slipstream.
BB Speedway is just annoying.
The game lacks some faster ovals, like previous titles had Daytona, Indianapolis an Motegi, for more powerful cars.
Daytona is bloody fastest, Indianapolis is fast but is tricky with its relatively low camber corners, Motegi makes you use your brakes, added to Blue Moon and Northern Island, you would have the all around in oval tracks. I believe many people would enjoy it. Not being my cup of tea, I'm sure I would race it on Sport Mode. Motegi on a one make, road tires, Dodge Charger Hellcat would be a very enjoyable race, I believe.

On rally mode, PD never got it right on the physics side, maybe some people dig it, I don't know. IMHO PD should do it right or spent the time in more useful things, like improving the penalty system.

Rally driving is unchanged since GT2, but oddly enough that's why I love it. It's not realistic at all, but it's still a nice distraction.

That being said though, the ruts and uneven terrain on Fisherman's ranch make for a pretty authentic rally driving experience. It's by far the best attempt at recreating the rugged terrain of a rally stage for a GT game. When I modify cars, I usually modify them specifically for rally, which presents a nice challenge. Even with small hatchbacks like the Citreon DS3, optimising them for rally driving is one of the more satisfying things to do in GT Sport, for me at least.

Oval racing on the other hand..... dear oh dear..... I've had bad experiences with oval racing both online and in single player. It's carnage, absolute carnage. Maybe if they added Nascars and some real life circuits I'd become more interested, but the ones currently in the game just don't work for me....

Omg the rallying is sooo bad! I decided today to complete all the missions as I hadn't really bothered my backside with them.
But the rally ones are doing my nut in!
Honestly what kind of rally have PD used as inspiration for this? Is this a style of rallying they actually do in Japan?
It's not rally, it's not rally cross, it's just crap racing on dirt tracks!
And the dirt physics are woeful at best, rally cars do not handle like hover cars!
Seriously once I'm done with these missions I will never touch the rallying ever again.

Oh and I love rallying, watch the WRC and WRX, being Scottish I idolised Mcrae and loved all his games. I play Dirt Rally regularly.

I honestly can't believe they wasted time putting this in the game at the expense of Monza, Spa, Silverstone and more!

Personally, GTS is the first GT game where I haven't hated the rallying events, I actually quite enjoy them. I see a lot of people are complaining about the "physics", if anything I've found the "physics" in GTS easier to relate to because it does actually feel like your inputs are having some kind of effect... GT's of old felt like once traction was broken, you carried along your current path until you hit something no matter what you did... in past games I always felt like I was missing out on the trick, or that there was something I didn't know in order to get the cars around a circuit. I don't dislike the tracks either and I got more satisfaction from golding the rally events than I did, for instance, the Nordschleife events.

Granted GTS rallying does not reflect either WRC or WRX in any real shape of form, but I don't really mind that. It's circuit racing, but on different surfaces, and I'm okay with that, it's simply a different challenge, in the same way drifting is.

Which brings me on to ovals. I don't mind ovals, and I don't mind oval racing. I appreciate that there are different characteristics to the tracks, and that oval racing requires a different skill set... so I don't mind them being in the game.... except... the execution of the "physics" etc. behind them doesn't really allow for the nuances to show, so they do seem a bit lifeless to me... and with no proper oval racing machinery it seems like a waste. If they bought back some NASCAR (or Maybe had a Gr.S. category), work on the relevant "physics", control methods and related penalties I think it could work. I can understand how we've ended up with penalties for bump-drafting, but it shouldn't be the case.

GT is a game the celebrates car culture, admittedly they miss the execution of it sometimes, but I like that it tries to be inclusive.

They didn't do either oval or rally very well. The game would have been better if time spent on those parts was instead spent on making a couple more real world circuits. I love rally racing when it's done well. It's not done well in GTS. I have never liked oval racing.

I don't mind rally or oval..
Both aren't really my thing but I enjoy giving them a spin.
Did I hear the rally is garbage ??? It's not garbage.

It depends on what you are looking for.

If its realistic loose surface physics then GTS gets it wrong.
If its realistic rally stages then GTS gets it wrong.
If its realistic Rally Cross stages then GTS gets it wrong.

To be honest I'm not sure exactly what rally in GTS is supposed to be, but if you enjoy it then go for it, but its not going to change the fact that its not in any way an accurate representation of rally as a sport.

How about if they made the rally more like real life. Not head to head but you get put in a lobby of 12-16 then every 10-20s depending on Dr rating, a beast is released. One shot, very occasional overtakes.
Would lessen the damage to sr but not negate the need for clean driving.
Then simply ranked by time.

Not the most exciting way I guess but at least the format would be realistic.

I have always enjoyed rally in GT games, with GTS being my favorite version. I found myself using the same techniques i used in Dirt Rally , which admittedly I haven't played since PC2 released. I'll have to play it again to get it fresh in my mind.

@Renrag39 I'd like it if they did throw rally into the daily races somehow - or possibly feature them in the upcoming GT League.

I usually stay away from ovals, but love the road courses (Daytona Road Course was among my favorites in PS3 GT).

How would it be more realistic?

Time split releases are only ever done on point to point stages, not looped stages. The only time looped stages are used are in Super Special Stages, and the cars run in pairs (and sometimes still solo) and are not even on the same piece of track at the same time.

The closest in GTS is Rally Cross, but the circuits are too wide and missing Joker sections.

Regardless even if they got the above right, the physics would still be wrong.

They would have been better off making the rally courses more like P2P stages, the rally physics aren't great but aren't terrible either.

Not a big fan of oval racing, once the leading car breaks out of the the slipstream from the rest of the group he can usually get away and win very easily while the rest fight it out and lose a bunch of time. It's the kind of racing that needs pit stops and refueling, it doesn't work all that great when it's only a normal sprint to the finish.

Never said it was a perfect solution @Scaff but could be an option. Just finish at the end of the lap.

Tbh, I've never rallied, closest I've gotten is going down a manky track in my legacy to my favourite fishing swim and I do barely 15mph so I've no idea how it should feel.
