Rally Car Shifting

I put this question here because there are rally cars in GT5 and it is a much more active section of the forum rather than the Dirt 3 section.

I'm not big into rally car racing at all so try not to shoot me down but do rally cars in real life have an actual H shifter or do they use whatever the shifting is called when you just move the shifter up and down like on the DFGT wheel?

I would think the older rally cars would use the H pattern while the newer ones would use the simple up and down shifting movement but like I said I'm not very big into it and I would like to know considering I might get Dirt 3. :)

They are called sequential transmissions.
I believe, but im not sure about it that the WRC uses them in their cars to ease of use.
 
WRC cars in this game have paddle shifters. But in 2011 regulations they now have the up and down sequential trannys in them.

there are the 3 different types of transmissions: the standard H-pattern used on older rally cars, the seqential stickshift used on some of the newer ones(includes racecars such as ZR1 RM), and the paddle-shift transmissions used on other newer ones (SX4 WRC). i belive that they are used to ease wear on the clutches and both to facilitate faster shifts and be easier to use (push up to downshift-pull down to upshift VS. Move to left or right and up or down into one of the 6 or seven slots for the gears)

Yes, they used an H-pattern because the sequential hadn't been invented yet.
 
The paddle shift system used in rally cars (sometimes it's a hoop behind the steering wheel) works differently to a conventional paddleshift. As mrluckypants said, you push it away to change down and pull it back to change up, it makes no difference what side of the wheel you use. This is so that the driver doesn't accidentaly pull the wrong paddle when the wheel is upside down or his arms are crossed over.

And use both hands to do both types of shifting(when the "correct" hand isn't available), that's even more important. It usually depends on whether the driver is right or left handed.

however, today, rally cars still use h pattern shifters. subaru rally team usa incar videos show this to be true... albeit, it isn't a wrc s2000 class car so it is different from the cars in this years wrc, and the usa subie also is very different from ever the older wrc cars... it may be one of few to still employ h patterns.

EDIT: The reason the WRC today uses sequential transmission in their s2000 wrc cars is due to a few factors. 1, it is much more mechanical, and has been described by loeb and i believe wilson as a more natural, hardcore and involved way to control gears. 2, the wrc, after losing most all but citroen and ford over the years in terms of manufacturers, wished to create regulations for teams to get more involved in the sport. the transmission is one such regulation that helps cut down on prices to design such vehicles, which MAY have helped MINI and Volkswagen make their way back into the motorsport, alongside requiring much smaller vehicles that i believe may also have to be fuel efficient?? 3. it is considered more reliable for the vehicles.

For a while wrc cars used a form of auto around the 2003 period and costs were at more than 70k per unit
This is just from memory so it might be wrong but costs were very high as mentioned so they were banned sometime after they stopped showing wrc in America so I'm not current on wrc regs.
