Hey folks,

Having done a lot of 600PP Suzuka and a while ago some 700PP Daytona, I've had a number of interesting things happen to me online because of the Rubber Band Effect (catch up mode, whatever you want to call it).

I thought maybe some of you could share some of the stories concerning this feature of they're funny, interesting or just plain irritating. Or even just to say what you've noticed.

I was leading last night in one race, at one point 21 seconds ahead and at the start of the last lap, the lack of grip was unbelievable. I managed a 2:25 at Suz-600 on the last lap and I didn't miss a braking point or go off anywhere. The first lap had been a 2:18 from a standing start!

On the flipside, in another race I had to answer a call from abroad so I didn't start the race and everyone zoomed off (sorry to the guy who ran into the back of me wrecking his start:( ).
When I did eventually get going again, the leader was almost a minute ahead and one of the resulting laps I did was 2:10!! Something quite impossible under normal circumstances. Still came last :P

Is this just much more noticeable at Suzuka where there is more chance of the field being widely spread out? I remember it used to be almost impossible to establish an unassailable lead at Daytona also.

All the best

haha looks like I'm the only one who gets regular grief from this :)

That's not to say that I'm always winning, hell no. I've been in races where GTP members have had a rough start and been punted about a bit so they thought to stay back and race among themselves. Regardless of where I am I seem to notice the lack of grip progressively increasing per lap if there are drivers a little way behind the lead pack. Its just a little bit of a shame because when I start a race and I am the host, I_never_quit, however bad it's going.

And when you know there is no longer an opportunity to have a close race, I just like to see what overall race times I can do...but when your lap times follow a 2:18, 2:21, 2:26 route due to RBE...it becomes difficult.

Ah well, sorry for starting a dud thread guys :)

All the best

I'm not sure that it's a "dud" thread, but you did ask for "glory/horror" stories and I imlagine most people are somewhere in the middle.

I've been in the lead, having avoided the punters fights, only to be bitting my nails as they reel me in thanks to RBE. On the other hand I've gone off and recovered to a good finish thanks to RBE. I imagine others have seen this too.

I seems to remember one lap going off at the end of a straight as I was going 20kph faster than normal, although I'm not sure if that was RBE or just a better exit.

I have found that many GTP do not know what RBE means.. They know it as something else. Most call it boost. I called it the Rubber Band Effect. But this has been covered a lot in the forums.. Which is prob why you are not getting the response you would hope for. I myself have been a negative supporter of the RBE.

As for horror stories? Each online race is one with the RBE. Even though I won, I can't help to think how the game let me or helped or took from me. Most of the time the game takes from me, punishes me for being a fast driver. I cannot stand such a staged environment, intented for average joe racers to play this game. If I spin out, I should not be able to catch up to you in less than lap.. I dispise the RBE..

It should be removed from the game and deleted from my memory. Its just the constant change in gip..and how the brakes work, tires work, horse power..alltthe things the RBE changes when you are leading a race.. Thus making it difficult to put down constistant laps.

Although I have noticed since the last update the RBE was reduced signifcantly. There is an update tonight, we will have to see what they do to the RBE..I am quite sure they will increase it again..because most average joes cann'ot keep up with its new effect.

Each race is a horror story with the RBE..But I still have fun playing the game and racing my competitors.

I ran a bunch of races at Suz750 recently. I wasnt going too hard because the compitition was sub par. after a couple hours i quit out and checked a message i'd seen come into my mailbox. I figured someone wanted setup advice or some such thing. Instead i got a note from someone I hadnt even noticed as being a good racer telling me that"your not so fast. i was faster tan you almost every lap. You never wouldve beaten me if i could catch you on the first lap" Sigh.

now that's funny

Most people know it as "boost" because that is what it was called in GT4 2-Player and LAN mode. So those of us familiar with it still think of it that way.

My only "horror story" is that I don't adjust well to a car handling differently at different times for no apparent reason. This leads to an interesting situation where, on a track I'm good at, the boost is actually a detriment to me if I'm trailing the pack. (This was also true for my in GT4 lan mode. Boost there made certain cars devilishly twitchy if you were in the back).

For example, on HSR (currently HSR reverse) I am quite accustom to taking and holding the lead position. I know precisely how my Ford GT LM, my Elise 111r / Tuned and my Ford GT road car handle when I'm in the lead position or near it. Of course, I still screw up sometimes, or get punted, and once I get into a trailing position I often might as well just give it up. Suddenly I'm spinning out in corners I usually take with ease, or getting vastly increased snap-back problems, or coming up too fast on someone in a corner and ending up wrecking myself because I don't want to accidently punt them. The game is trying to "help" me, but all it is really doing is messing me up. I'm getting used to it, but it is really taking time...
