RBR advice

OK I know I am pretty late getting into the RBR deal but I finally have gotten around to it and while I can tell it's got a lot of promise it just seems literally impossible...

I am not hater of a challenge and I know realistic is much harder that what's out there for the most part, but I am still getting pretty hammered on this game (can't even pass the last advanced driving course let alone place in any "recces"). I am not a noob to games or driving games at all (been gaming for 2 decades now) and love the challenge of sim driving as much as arcade driving.

So I was hoping for some advice, first off the wheel setup:

I see people mentioning degrees of rotation set, but I don't see that in my setup... in my game I have option for linearity, extended or default rotation and a slider that I cam move to determine how far lock to lock... nothing to tell me degrees. I can guess at percentages but it sounds like there is a better way.

I haven't even started to dig into the numerous setup options which might well help me for the rallys, but I figure on the SS driving school track it should be setup fine already since you can't tinker with it right? Even so I have VICIOUS problems getting the car to get around the track anywhere near as fast as it seems I need to. My best time ever is 89... full 5 seconds over passing and that was as much as I could eek out...

When watching the high speed ride along of the same track it seems Richard has some kind of magically better car than I do or something. His car doesn't rattle and bounce all over and he can get a good few feet off road without any kind of visual loss of control. When I try to drive the same line at anywhere near the same speeds my car goes careening off the track and totally looses grip and once I am a full tire off the dirt the car starts bouncing and shaking the wheel like mad and it's pretty much impossible to get any kind of control until I drop below 40kph. Basically once I am over 60kph even dead center of the road it's never more than a few seconds until something makes my car feel partially airborn killing almost any control I have.

I was hoping to get some kind of speed advice watching the high speed ridealong but it doens't show his speedo so I have no real idea what gears and speeds he is at. At the very best I can't get past the top end of 4th gear ever and getting out of 3rd is rare for me, is that what this track should be driven at or do I just need a lot more practice?

Thanks for any advice or hints, I want to like this game a lot but at the moment it feels as if there is literally something wrong with it like I got a buggy version or something.

Just a few quick bits of advice in regard to RBR.

On the wheel settings I honestly can't comment as personally I have never felt the need to adjust them.

What I can tell you is that RBR requires a stupidly huge amount of practise and Patience. Starting points are to avoid full throttle unless you are on a straight (and you wheels are straight as well) as thats a sure trip into the trees. You will need to be very smooth with all your inputs, not just the steering but the throttle and brakes as well. You may find at first that using a higher gear and lower revs may help to reduce the torque at the driven wheels, which will give you a bit more warning of the limits. As in RBR the difference between control and chaos is little more than a few mph.

On the settings side of things, one of the most problematic things to begin with can be the diff mapping for the active diffs. As standard most of the cars are set-up with a massive diff bias to-wards left-foot braking (RBR has diff maps for this) and if you don't left foot brake (or don't do it smoothly) you can get in a lot of trouble. To begin with try and ensure that you have your braking done before you turn the wheel, as this will also help a lot.

Hope the above helps get you started and good to see another RBR driver.

Thanks I will keep that in mind... the only other problem I am running into is the ebrake button being right next to the view change button... infalably I end up switching views while in the middle of a hairy ebrake turn... guess I will have to work that out along with running higher gears.

I did find a vid of someone doing a fast race on SS with the tach visible so hopefully that will serve to help some.

Well running a gear higher worked well, got a lot more control back and actually felt like I stood a chance of keeping it on the road. Also made braking loose into a drift more reliable by downshifting.

Finally beat SS but only by .3 seconds... failed it by less than a second a dozen times lol!
