ok my parents have this old computer with i think a pentium 2. theyre too cheap to buy a new one and its running really crappy. i was gonna re-format it to see if that helps. but when i go to re-format the hard drive it says it cant be done because there are files in use by windows. ive never seen this before on any computer. what do i do? i was thinking of just taking the hard drive out and putting it into my computer and re-image it from there. to see if that would work but i have a feeling that wouldnt work.

You can't format a drive that windows is on from within windows. You have to go back to DOS or use a bootable Windows CD.

If you don't know that, what are you doing attempting to format a computer?

Good question!

Find yourself a bootable disk, restart the computer, and have some fun!

Was it the drive that has Windows on it? If it's not a system drive, it'll let you. But it won't let you format the drive that Windows is on from within Windows.
