It's been a while since I've posted, but I visited Monaco and Venice this summer, where are located two places we all know from GT4 (the Cote d'Azur track, and the Piazza San Marco from Photo Travel mode). I walked around about half of the Cote d'Azur track and took pictures, and also snapped a couple in P. San Marco. When I got home I also took pictures of the corresponding places from inside GT4 to see how they compare. I just posted the pictures and a little writeup about them here. I hope you find it interesting.

(It's about 1MB total, so will take a few minutes to load if you're on dial-up, but still not too bad.)

Amazing pictures. GT4 is so close to the real thing, except for a few of the background buildings. I wonder if PD had to get permissions to model all the real life buildings and didn't get some? 👍 👍

Looks good, but for some reason i cannot see the real life pictures of the Piazza

What the.. Do they need permission to model the buildings?

Lovely pics man!! Wish I had the money to go to Monaco.. (Monte Carlo(My Name :sly: ))

No they don't need permission to model a building even if it's a Tesco's or HMV.

Very nice, but some of the pics don't seem to be working?

I'd very much like to read the end of this, but without pics it's a bit pointless. Can you please PM me if you ever get the pics back up?

Cheers.

Those are some awesome pics, dude!
I'm hoping to make my way to the Nurburgring next summer when I go to Germany for the World Cup. I'll have to get a nice camera or something.

Great pics. PD made a great effor, I don't know if it is the angle from which the pictures were taken or what but most of the buildings seem to be a tiny bit off-location. Not that I notice the buildings when racing :-)

That is pretty cool, and I am sadden that some pictures aren't working.

i've gotta get to europe some time.
nice photos... its cool to see these sort of comparisons; like the one that was done for tokyo-246 (i forget who did it). 👍

they should of put the cow in gt4 ;)
but it seems that they were trying to simplify the background quite heavily in gt4.
poor ps2 just can't push that many polys around.
it looks like some of the elevation changes are more extreme in reality as well.
but i think hill grade is an issue for every track in gt4.

Sorry everyone - some of the pictures were indeed broken. I fixed them and believe they should all work now. Glad you liked 'em so far.

Nice stuff. While I've felt that GT4's models were pretty good, seeing pics of the real thing just brings into focus how much they've had to cut out to fit it on the PS2. (Half-Life2 gives you much more realistic real-estate on the PC). Wonder how much work they'll have to do on a PS3 version? Maybe in that one, we can get confetti, papers flying around, multi-polygon details on buildings (like windows with cornices, for one)...

It's a lot of hard work reducing complicated structures to simple polygons that STILL look like them. And GT4's team did pretty well.

Great pics! I wish that some day I have an opportunity to go there too. I hope that in GT5 PD could model exiting the tunnel more real.. In other words, it´s a fact that it takes a while to get used to the daylight after that dark tunnel. Imagine coming out of the tunnel full throttle using an F1!

Very nice, thanks for sharing 👍 👍

This is exactly why I thought PD used the old GT3 Monaco instead of redoing it.

The city changes alot.
In all honesty, the Cote D' Azur track, while nice, is disappointing in terms of realism. There are way to many things PD missed out on the scenery and area itself.

In 2001, the city was a bit different than now, 2005.

I hope PD actually go back and model it right instead of usning that same old GT3 area.

awesome work, I was at Saint Marks Square about 5 years ago. it's amazing how many pigeons there are.
Great work and Congratz to you for taking the time

Cool pics.....thanks for taking da time to do them and the right up......its odd that some many things in GT4 have been left out......simple things like signposts, flags, gates etc etc.......this maybe due to the graphical power of the ps2.......such things were probably not deemed worth modeling which would slow the game down.......GT5 we can hope for much more realism......

It maybe the fact that PD cannot accurately model everything due to not having the permission.....its a real same though.

You can see that moutain scenery in gt4 and real life looks the same.....and that is because it is! things that are far in the distance in GT4 are just real life photos mapped onto a 3d mesh.....

awesome thanks for the pics! it was refreshing to say the least

Great comparison. It's amazing how close GT4 is to the real thing. :boggled:

Excellent pictures! Love the fact that you managed to catch a real life Aston Martin Volante in one of them too!

Wow, the Piazza on gt4 is soo similar to the one in real life 👍

I saw that too and had to pick my jaw up off the ground!

and you wanted the game finnished when?
it was alreadt well overdue :)

great pics.... funny tho its just like playing the game, i didnt pay attention to the scenery :P

Nice shots, and great job on gettin the simular shots in GT4, must have been a long process. PD should hire me to fly around taking millions of photo's of places they wanna make tracks out of, and of tracks that already exist. What a job.

Wow awesome comparisons, and also looking at that I appreciated the amount of work they go through to change Monaco to the F1 circuit set up

Why would PD not have permission to model buildings? If they didn't have permission then our friend here wouldn't have permission to put pictures of the buildings on his site.
Who would you get the permission from? The current owners, the occupiers, the architecht (it's his design, so why wouldn't he/she want fees for copyright?) the builders (they interpretted the design)...for each building that you can see?

The simple reason has to be that the background is less important than the cars, the track and the immediate sides of the track. You're supposed to be racing, not admiring the scenery! It's the ultimate driving simulator, not the ultimate architecture simulator. :)

Hey thanks for sharing the pics.......Great work!!
