Hi guys,

Just wanted to share my experience to find a seat for my cockpit.
Off course everyone wants to spent the least possibly and get the higher quality.
Well, i thought i would invest my money on decent hardware (wheel, pedals and gearshift), build the standing and the seat.....

After some thought i remember the scrapyard. Lots of cars are destroyed with seats in a good condition. I went to the first scrapyard i have found and they gave me one seat. Then i build some anti rust paint (just to be sure), deassemble the seat, wash it and paint metal parts, and then reassemble it, It look like new and is from a real car. I spent 2 hours and 10€ on the paint.

Is there anyone who did the same thing?

I got my seat from an acquaintance from another web forum. It was free and has very little rust and no wear to the fabric. I could do what you did but the seat is ~20 years old so it can't get much worse with rust.

It is defenitly the way to go though. Much cheaper than buying a new seat.

I built my cockpit for under $100 NZD. I will spend a bit more when I end up painting it.

My seat was free as well, thrown out out back of an auto parts store (there's a carwash there, I wasn't just lurking out back of stores.) I think it came from a mid 90s Civic. I had to dig it out of the snow but it was definately worth it, fabric is in great shape just needed a cleaning.

I also wrapped it in a garbage bag when I brought it inside for a few weeks incase anything came to life inside it. My mom's Dodge Duster had moths living in the seats, first warm day in spring they all hatched one night and filled her car, so I wasn't going to have that happen in my house.

Something in the back is broken but I've got it rigged up with a brace so it feels perfect. I wouldn't trust it in a crash but it's great for a sim cockpit.

Heh, one day when I thought that I need a piece of a car in my house, I went to the local junkyard to find a seat, but they had seats only from almost new jaguars, BMWs, Mercedeses etc. Too expensive for me, so I went to a not-so-local junkyard (it was more like a bunch of different junkyards in one place). Firstly got to Japanese cars parts, where I was offered an ugly textured seat out of an old Opel Astra (japanese?!) and they wanted almost 15eur for that, then checked what will guys from Audi/VW have, and Bingo! I got a free seat out of Audi 100 C4. It had a few small rips, smelled like a dog (and had a lot of dog hair on it) and was standing outside for a couple rainy nights, but overall was quite in a good shape as a free item. When got back home I washed it with a lot of chemicals and a garden hose, and now I use it as my office chair and sometimes place it in front of the TV.
