Realistic Tire Grip

I was curious about what type of tire available in game has the most realistic grip for what would come on cars in real life (high end sports cars and such). Now, I am aware that there are thousands of different tire band and design variations in real life however I am looking for what would be around that same grip level of tires in game. Are they the Sports Hards that most cars come with or something more or less grippy than that?
 
I was able to hoon an STi hatch not to long ago at a huge auto auction in Dallas. Sports hard tires in GT5 seem to be the closest in replicating it.
 
It seems odd that the trie grip model would be missing something as important as contact patch data. Because of this PD has skewed the feel of cars being driven stock since SH tires do not have the correct grip amount for all cars that come with them. If this data had been included then theoretically all of the cars in-game stock tires would perform correctly.
 
I always use sport soft tires on street legal cars under 600PP and it feels pretty real to me!

You should try 500PP with sports hard... Check out Legend of the Streets on my Signature... It's super fun... managing limited grips which tyres give you.
 
From my own personal racing experience in a 1963 Triumph Spitfire, the racing hard compound is the most comparable to the Hoosier Vintage TD's that I run with it. A couple friends of mine that run SCCA on Pirelli P Zero's have equated the racing mediums with their own. Now, I don't have any fancy research to support that, but it's just my own observations. I would think that for more of a stock/autocross sort of feel the sports soft tires are your best bet. Of course there are those that swear up and down that anything beyond those tires are for "noobs" but as far as I'm concerned it takes just as much skill to go fast on better tires as going fast on the lower ones.

I agree. In real life, race organizers use tire selection to control race speeds. Similar issue in GT5.

As far as the original question goes...it depends. Most street cars have a maximum cornering g load of less than 1. However, high performance street cars can easily exceed 1 g. So, if you are looking for realism, then try some different tires and watch the g-meter at the bottom of the screen.
 
I usually use either sports hard or sports soft for non-race cars. Power should be proportional to grip, so less powerful cars are ok with sports tires.
