Right I currently have Microsoft Security Essentials on my computer, but I was interested in knowing if there was any more more reliable free software and programs available, especially those covering areas like removing adware, spyware, and making sure nothing leeches on to your internet or uses your bandwidth....

Avast and superantispyware. Download both from cnet or similar, sorry on phone so can't link

Edit, you nerd spyware protection also, which supersntispyware is.

This. In combination with Microsoft security essentials, and common sense is the best protection.

That's what I use, malwarebytes and MSE. And common sense.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, they're both pretty good.

As for firewall, make sure you use the standard windows firewall, do not use a third party one.

Your right index finger. 👍

You are not the millionth visitor, you did not win a free iPod. Most serious computer problems that I've seen are down to somebody downloading files they shouldn't have.

This isn't meant to be a lecture, just know that you will be best protected from serious computer problems if you just exercise reasonable caution.

I've used AVG Free for a while now. Doesn't intrude much, does its job.

I use zone alarm as my firewall, as from what I hear ms firewall is not great, as if it was, companies would not need to use 3rd party solutions. Also common sense helps but if a safe site you regularly use gets hacked and passes spyware without you knowing common sense won't help you.
