Not even a full day into 2024 and Japan's west coast has been hit by a 7.5 earthquake with a major Tsunami warning for the Noto Peninsula and surrounding coastal prefectures.

Magnitude 7.5 earthquakes have occurred near Taiwan. A tsunami warning was issued for Japan.

VERY rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurring 20 miles west of North Plainfield, NJ.

4.8 ain't much....but the east coast is really, really not prepared for anything much bigger than that. There is basically zero seismic resiliency in east coast construction practices, from what I've seen.

We're not prepared at all, and the effects are much stronger and hit a much wider area because the bedrock in the plate is much harder over here.
