Recent update breaking cars in my garage?

I recently had to abandon my old ps3, and move on to a newer system. I was in the process of generating thumbnails when I found two cars in my garage that are most definitely broken. They are both standard cars, a Nissan SKYLINE Sedan 300GT '01, and a Mitsu ECPLIPSE GT '06. I probably bought them from the ucd, date acquired is some time between 7/26/2011 and 8/7/2011.

I can set the favorite status for them to on or off, but trying to do anything else with these two cars results in a black screen for a couple seconds, then the GT logo, then I end up on the GT mode home screen. If I set either of them as a favorite, I can't make it past the course selection screen in arcade mode without getting bumped back, and if I try to test drive in the course maker, I just get a seemingly endless black screen that forces me to quit the game from the xmb.

All of this happened when I let the new ps3 download all the updates, but I declined the hdd installation before going on to generate the thumbnails. So after finding this problem, I went to the GT5 options and deleted all files, salvaged files (none found), cleared the system cache, saved and then restarted the game, where I opted to do the hdd installation. After all that the cars were still broken.

So I decided to format the whole ps3 and try again, no big loss since GT5 was the only thing on there, and my usb with the save was still plugged in. This time I declined to install both the updates and the hdd data, and went straight to the garage to the problem cars to find that they worked fine.

So then I proceeded to generate thumnails for 988 cars
Which really wasn't too bad thanks to this nifty sixaxis emulator software I found that does macros :sly:
I wasn't kicked back to the home screen once

After watching my computer press buttons for a good amount of time, I went and installed the hdd data, yay more waiting. Once that was done the problem cars still worked fine. Then, I quit the game and started it again to install the updates, more waiting. After it loads I check the garage and guess what?
Both cars are broken again 👎

So I'm pretty sure this is being caused by an update. The only other thing I could do to narrow it down, is delete everything again and install each update one at a time, and check the cars as I go. I really don't care to do that and generate 988 thumbnails again though.

So... wtf? It's not a huge deal to me since I can just use other, less boring cars. But what if I had the problem car selected before doing the update? Would the game just fail to load?
