Recommend a monitor?

Getting to the point, I came home last night to find that someone in the house killed my monitor while I was at work. The only saving grace is that I was in the mood for a new, bigger one anyway, though I would have naturally preferred to have it beforehand.

Anyway, since I'm a complete newb on this product, I really only have a couple requirements. 1, I use my monitor for not only my computer, but my Xbox as well, so I would prefer something that a gamer would choose to own for the best performance as I assume that will also cover movie quality on the screen. As with this, my original monitor had a 2nd VGA port that I used with the Xbox.

However, since I'm looking for something better, I've been suggested to buy one with a dual dvi & a single hdmi and just purchase a hdmi adapter cable for the X360.

2, it needs to be 24-27". It can be bigger, but as I have seen so far, for what I'm wanting, a good monitor over 27" starts to get pricey.

Any help is appreciated. There's not really a budget as I'm not looking for the cheapest setup, but at the same time, I don't need the absolute best of the best, either.
 
I've bought an Asus VE278H about three months ago. It's a 27'' monitor. Brightness, colours, contrast and latency are great, in my opinion. It comes with dual HDMI inputs and your usual VGA input. There's a DVI/HDMI cable included, if I remember correctly. Speakers are build in as well, should need be.

Now, I haven't owned that many monitors myself, but compared to what I've seen at some of my friends' placed, it does offer quite a nice picture. Not too expensive either, it sells for $ 260 or thereabouts.
 
Find out who broke it and make them pay for it.

Only a few suspects.
 
I present the Monoprice 27" monitor. Everything I've read on it reports it having the same IPS panel as the 27" Apple displays, just in a cheaper housing.

I'm not going to make them pay more than $120 which is all my older monitor is worth nowadays.

I'm using a pair of 21" Dell Ultrasharps (Model U2211H) and a much older Samsung SyncMaster 205BW. The Ultrasharps ran me about $220 each when I got them in 2010. Colors are fairly true on the Dells, but they don't compare to the Pro IPS displays with their larger color gamut.
 
I run a Dell U2711. On the pricey side, but picture quality can't be matched, and has every input under the sun (and a built in cardreader and USB Hub). Also great warranty support. IPS or nothing.
 
I also run a U2711 for my main monitor. Best monitor I've ever owned. For a more cost effective alternative, the Samsung SyncMaster P2770 has also treated me well. Their LED counter part looks promising.
 
The LG has 1920 x 1080 while the Dell and Monoprice monitor are both 2560 x 1440. I just don't think the pixel density is worth it on the LG for that size.
 
I'm using a BenQ GL2450HM 24" monitor. It has a 5.5 ms overall response time (input lag) which is the 5th fastest led/LCD monitor and the fastest under 350$. It's 199$ shipped if you use the MLG$20 code from the BenQ website.

I researched monitors for almost a year until I bought this one. I almost pulled the trigger on an asus, but it had 3 ms more input lag. I've played games since I can remember and competitively since 1999 (first in Starcraft, then to counter strike.) This monitor is as close as I've seen to a CRT monitor in terms of input lag and that's important when playing fighting/racing/fps games.

I suggest you research what you're after before you spend money on a monitor and get a great picture with noticeable input lag.

The LG has 1920 x 1080 while the Dell and Monoprice monitor are both 2560 x 1440. I just don't think the pixel density is worth it on the LG for that size.

The reviews on the Monoprice absolutely praise it's screen, but it seems to get a lot of bad points on the overall product as the casing being cheap & some of the buttons not even working properly.

Trivial I suppose. The Dell is amazing, but Im still going to look around. Not saying it can't be beat, but I wasn't intending to spend that much money at the moment.

They don't have to know that.

Say it is worth $150.

Pocket the extra $30 or use it to get an even more expensive monitor.

Yeah, the housing on the Monoprice is cheap, but you won't find a panel of that quality for under $700 in most cases. If the housing and build quality for stand is an issue, I'd suggest the Dell as well.

That and a B-grade panel that failed Apple's QA testing and was subsequently rejected, meaning that the possibility of dead pixels and a shorter life are higher, but it could be great and last forever. It's a gamble, Catleap, AOC and the like are similar; same panels as you'd find in expensive monitors but not as well made.


I have a Dell U2412M and it's absolutely awesome, but it's 16:10 and I'm pretty sure that means a 1080p input would be stretched to fill the screen. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Dell, though.

I run a Dell U2410 as my pc monitor/2nd PS3/2nd Xbox 360 display. It may be a bit out of your price range (699$ AU) but I've had 2 dell monitors and both were/are brilliant monitors.

Main reason I got this monitor is for the multitude of inputs (also my last one was destroyed in house fire :().
 
Asus VH242H.

Massive. 1080p. Dirt cheap. I bought it because someone on the forum told me to get it. Best decision ever :dopey:

Edit: It seems that Asus discontinued that monitor. My condolences.
 
I have always used monitors with glossy screens, but when it was time to upgrade, I chose to buy a Dell U2311H with a matte screen. I hated it. It looked very grainy because of the aggressive anti-glare coating. I don't think Dell's coating is that aggressive anymore, but I would recommend you to look at one in-person, especially if you are used to glossy screens, like I was.
 
I would look for a Samsung P2770HD. You can find them new for around $250. They support multiple inputs, has built in speakers and TV Tuner as well. For your multi-functional needs, it has a great picture at it's native resolution of 1920x1080 (16:9). Personally, I can confirm that the HDMI does look better than the VGA/DVI input for whatever reason. I had slight ghosting on mine, but using the HDMI cleared that up. I am ultra picky and hyper critical. I think it had do to with my particular setup at the time. I have it on my wife’s computer now and looks great. It states 5ms response time though the one I got from Costco has printed specs of 2ms. I also own two of the non HD models and the screens look just as good, sharp and bright. Colors are slightly exaggerated compared to the U2711 but the difference in a $250 to a $1200 monitor will have it's drawbacks. You would not notice the differences unless you are doing graphics and need print perfect calibrated colors.

Hmm interesting you say that. As my old dell monitor kept the 16:9 ratio (was 1920x1200) when using consoles, but there was an option to make fill the full 16:10. Will have to have a look with this current one an see if it keeps 16:9 aspect ratio or full screens the picture. (I mainly use it for pc stuff, other people use it for the consoles in full view) I use the pip function if i use the consoles.
 
Not a 100% yet, but this will probably be my next monitor purchase: Dell U2713HM or if I want to switch to lower res 1080P gaming, I might up the game play with 3D vision with the Asus VG278H.

That monoprice looks like quite a deal. Might look in to one down the road, you could have a 2 monitor set up for less than the cost of 1 apple display :lol:. If it's the same screen as the apple display it's a no brainer, apple's always had great displays in their machines, the one in my iMac is really really nice (although only 1680x1080).

Holy cow,

Two USB 3.0 download, a single USB upload, a headphone jack, HDMI, DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort.

What other inputs do you need? I suppose if you use it like a TV you might want multiple HDMI for example..... ;)

Update: Just put an order in on a VG278HE. 144hz and 3D ready. I'm more interested in the high refresh rates for smoother game play but the 3D might be fun. :)
