Plasma is out of the question, for some reason the guys wife hates plasma. I've tried to change her mind, but she claims you can't touch the screen or it ruins it. I tried to tell her I have a 3 year old and that is not the case.

Anyway, he will be watching mostly sports and playing games on it, so it needs a quick response time. I don't have any LCD experience except bad ones with the 2 I bought so I need some help picking one out.

Brand names that can and can not be trusted would really be helpful.

Can be trusted : Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG. That's about it as far as what I would trust.

Do not buy a Wal-Mart brand TV. It's OK to buy one from those 4 brands from Walmart, but don't buy a viewsonic or whatever Wal-Mart's resident brand is called.

Viewsonic makes great lcd monitors, as a matter of fact, I have been using one for several years, and I am using it now to write this comment.

Philips is great, they're supposed to be the most energy efficient and have the best quality. At least that's what I got- a philips 42" lcd @100hz/1080p/2ms. You can go for a lower spec model, maybe no ambilight or a slower response time, but it will still be great.
