Hey everyone, I'm newer to the forum and really looking at expanding into different games. Currently I have a ps3 with GT5 and GT6 (primarily playing this), a little homemade rig and a G27 connected to my 50" plasma. I'm really wanting to get into Project Cars and have been contemplating a PS4 vs a PC.

On one hand I can pick up a PS4 and Project Cars but I will have to upgrade to a different wheel. I've been looking around and have decided on a Thrustmaster T300RS, now this can work with all 3 aforementioned systems, but its getting it before I am able to use a wheel on the PS4 which is the problem. I would also like to continue on with the GT franchise so that is another thing to consider in weighing my options.

On the other hand, if I go with a PC I could use my G27 until I can upgrade to the T300RS, as well as being open to many more possible titles in the future. If I went with a PC I would also, later on, like to go to a triple monitor setup for sim racing. My only issue here is that I would like to either buy or build a computer that would perform ideally for all games.

My questions are which would be a better choice, PS4 or PC, given my current equipment, and IF a PC is the way to go, what are some recommended components to run these level of games.

I know its long, and sorry, I just dont know anything about building computers. Thanks in advance,

Nate

If you want to get more into sim racing, a PC would be the way to go. Saw a few build threads here https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/board/computers-technology.64/. Reading through a few of those should help you make up your mind about PC specs.

We probably won't see GT7 for at least another year. So I'd say a PS4 can wait, and if you go the PC route, there are lots of racing games to hold you over until GT7 is released.

Definitely PC. You can open up on not just PCARS but also rFactor 1/2, iRacing, Assetto Corsa...

As for PC components, it depends on you want from your PC and your budget.

What are the specs of your PC ? Since you have PS4 already just pick up the game. Sadly G27 does not work on PS4. But I guess wheel is something you will eventually upgrade sooner or later? But going PC route, depending on your config may need upgrading. Triple monitor setup you will obviously have to spend more. Asseto Corsa is releasing on PS4 too and Pcars2, GT7 in near future. You should be fine on PS4

I used to run a triple 1080p setup on one GTX 680, it was reasonable for everything up to the most recent sims (Assetto Corsa and Project CARS), but it was still possible to hit 60fps in both under certain conditions, namely with only a few other cars on the grid, graphics turned down a little (but not much) and, in the case of Project CARS, no weather effects. That was pre-release though. I wouldn't recommend a 2GB graphics card now, though, I'd say a GTX 970 would be your absolute minimum but frankly I don't think even a 980Ti would run Project CARS with everything sensible maxed out at 5760x1080. Two might, but that comes with its own headaches, the >£1,000 price tag for graphics hardware alone being one of them.

gtracedriver- I dont currently have a desktop or a PS4, I know i have to upgrade equipment, im just looking at what avenue to travel down and get me the best bang for the buck, but not have to spend a ludicrous amount to get racing. I still have the ps3 and G27

I think you need to wait. PS4 got a 40$ price drop in Japan. It may not be for other regions but may be they will have some good offer, bundle. I would still recommend a PS4. On PC you may have to upgrade cpu, gpu and supporting power supply if not more.

I have a few deals lined up at the moment that make my decision a little harder.

For one I'm not a huge hardcore gamer, like I only weekend game or for some hours here and there, I'm also a student and don't want to invest all this money to have it sit around. I primarily want to try assetto corsa and project cars as they are more sim oriented I feel by graphic perspective. This brings me back to console vs pc.
I can get a ps4 for 300$, p cars for around 45 and a t80 wheel to tide me over for 60 and be racing with a wheel today. There's also those junk converters as an option. With that we have p cars, assetto corsa coming out and eventually gt7. A downside is paying for playing online, like if I only turn the game on for a few hours once a week i may not get my money worth.

Xbox one provides the same issues for a wheel but there's p cars, forza 6 and soon assetto corsa, but I've read the p cars may not run as well as on a ps4 or pc. That would be a new counsel and eventually a wheel.

Now a pc. I have one lined up, a gaming pc, but I know I'll have to upgrade the graphics card. It's a great deal for a used system with a huge HDD I'll never need, all under 500$ but it has a geforce zotak gtx560. I know that won't suffice and that's why I haven't picked it up, then I'm into getting steam, maybe other software. But it runs windows 7 which I'm happy with. I could also use it for general Internet surfing and I could run an HUD.

But again I'm just getting into this I'm a weekend racer that just got a wheel and am looking to broaden my gaming area. I know you have to pay to play but I don't want my equipment sit around and become outdated before my eyes.

Another thing, will I be able to run p cars or assetto corsa right off the bat with that card (gtx560). I just read somewhere I could but it's best to update drivers and I would have to download drivers for the wheel, is there alot of work involved in initial set up and how is it comparable to being able to just turn on a purpose made gaming counsel and just starting the game.

@Casey555666 very long post cut a bit shorter:

Old PCs are a hassle even for someone who knows what they're doing. Second hand PCs are also a hassle. Old second hand PCs are the most hassle, so if you aren't quite comfortable with PC troubleshooting I really wouldn't recommend it.

You have limited gaming time so you want something you can be 90% sure will work when you sit down and turn it on, that's a console. I mean, people who know me know I'm a PC gamer and I will always recommend a PC if I think it's even slightly a better choice for someone, but for you I think it would be a bad idea. Yes, you have to pay to play online, but it's really, really cheap - like less than the price of a beer (where I live) a month.

Also note I would never say this if Assetto Corsa hadn't been announced for consoles. Right now I'm even half considering an Xbox One because Drive Club didn't interest me much, I have zero faith in GT7 and a simple plug and play box that can do Forza 6 and Assetto Corsa is quite appealing.

Thank you @neema_t , although I really like my beer, I picked this up after class today. Downer is the g27 not working but I had that issue regardless.

GTX 560 is a dated car now. DX 12 is suppose to improve performance but I am not sure if Win 7 and the card will be compatible. It can obviously play rfactor and some older games but newer games with decent graphics settings and fps could be problem. A decent cpu and ram is required too. Better to stick with a console

@gtracedriver1 i just decided to go out and get the forza 6 xbox one, I used to have a 360 and loved forza, then it red rings and I got out of video games for a bit. Atleast with this I can have the ps3 with gt5 and gt6, xbox1 with forza 6, and any others if i want, as well as PCars and when it comes out Assetto Corsa. I think I'll be fine with this, and the xbox cost about what that crappy computer would have.

Looks like you've made your decision so good for you. That's what I would have recommended. You have to be into tinkering if you go the pc route. I'd try selling the G27 and use the proceeds to fund a new wheel.

I picked up a ferrari 458 spider for 40 bucks..... I'm not a huge fan of it though and went back to a controller. I tried to sell the g27 and ps3 but not even a single bite so it'll stay for a bit. I'm going to work on an actual rig soon and decide on a better wheel to purchase, but that one was my first choice
