The crew of Red Dwarf will come back down to Earth when the cult comedy show returns to our screens this Easter.

More than two decades after the first series blasted off, celebrated characters Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten will all appear in the two part special.

Written and directed by co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites actors Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn. The two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, will kick start a Red Dwarf Easter weekend from Good Friday on TV channel Dave. This will be followed by Red Dwarf: Unplugged, a "no holds barred" episode with no sets, no effects and no autocue.

The weekend will climax with a behind-the-scenes special from the new production, Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth.

The project is Dave's biggest commission yet and its first foray into scripted comedy.

The Emmy award-winning offbeat series, set in space, has enjoyed phenomenal success since it first aired in 1988 on BBC2.

It brought in more than eight million viewers for its final eighth series, sold 7.25m DVD and videos worldwide, and was broadcast in some 25 territories worldwide.

The actors have hit the headlines for various reasons since the show ended.Charles now plays toyboy cabbie Lloyd in Coronation Street.

In November last year, John-Jules was ordered to carry out 120 hours community service for assaulting two refuse collectors.

Talkie Toaster
Ah, so you’re a waffle man!

That is all.:D

However, this could be pretty bad but I hope not. I never watched much after season 5/6 except the Krytie TV episode.

As a big RD fan I'm skeptical about this, I will watch it but I'm not holding my breath for anything amazing.

Likewise, I'll watch it but I won't be expecting too much.

Let's just hope these new episodes aren't a load of rubbish then... :ill:

What? They weren't happy doing things like hosting Battle Bots or doing bit parts in Tomb Raider movies?

As it will likely be nearly a year before I get to see it here in the states someone please let me know just how badly this sucks.

I am assuming this will be similar to the two-part follow-up special for The Office.

I'll save you some time right now.

It sucked really badly. Seriously, super-suck. They should have finished it at the end of series 6.

Disagree about the Series 6 thing, although my parents think the same. I quite liked 7 and 8. Maybe not as much as 1-6, but there were still some very good episodes.

Regarding the two new episodes, I hope they won't be as awful as Blackadder's come-back Back And Forth was. Rowan Atkinson really really looked like he was doing it for the money rather than the laughs. They really should have stopped after Blackadder's Christmas Carol.

Famine is spot on. Series 7 and 8 were cobbled together, and lacked the soul of the previous series efforts.

He's also right about this being a really really really bad idea. Part of me wishes Red Dwarf could have gone on forever, but mark my words, this is going to be bad. They should have left well enough alone.

;)

They should have stopped like Stoppy McStop of Stoptown, voted four times the most Stoppiest Stopper at the Stopping festival.

There is a risk that people are taking their rose-tinted specs off before watching the new one. It's really easy to knock something that's actually quite good just because it's made a comeback and "isn't like it used to be" (Maybe I did this for Back And Forth, but I do have a hunch that it genuinely wasn't very good).

I really doubt certain members of the cast (I'm thinking Chris Barrie in particular, as he seems to be the most down-to-earth IRL) would have agreed to another couple of episodes if they'd thought the script was pants.

As much as the likely hood of this being cack is very high, i am seriously looking forward to this. I am one the few that loved Series 8 just as much as the earlier stuff. It has some of the best belly laughs out of any of the series.

To the best of my knowledge Craig is the only one with steady work at the moment (correct me if i'm wrong), so i don't think it would take alot to get them all back. But i'd like to think they wouldn't revisit Red Dwarf after like 10 years just for some money especially if they thought the script was crap.

Unless Rob Grant is involved, the script will be crap. Doug Naylor can be funny in doses (prisoner basketball game, potato skin virus) but he doesn't have the ability to string funny out for 30 minutes. Neither does Rob Grant, but he's more consistently funny. With Naylor plugging the gaps you get Gunmen of the Apocalypse.

I've met all the Dwarf crew (except the Hollys). Rob Llewellyn posed for a Kryten pompous-face-off with me. Craig Charles was a bit stand-offish. Danny John-Jules was great. Chris Barrie was interested, but only in discussing OHV V8s (which was fine). Chloe Annett just seemed baffled by the attention (and, frankly, everything else).

Im so looking foreward to this! It will be great to see all the cast back together again after individually not doing all that much for the last decade or so... Although I watched loads of Scrapheap Challenge ;).

Ive actually been watching some of the early series on tape to refresh my memory (saw the re-runs on BBC about 10 years ago) but ive seen pretty much all of the recient seasons before it finished.

Will Holly return in this by any chance?

Robin.

I've not met any, so I'm basing my judgements on the TV work they've done outside of Red Dwarf, and interviews I've seen them do. I really enjoy the engineering programs etc that Chris Barrie's done. Nice to see someone have a genuine passion for something (in the same vein, it's why I enjoyed "Industrial Revelations", presented by Mark Williams from the Fast Show).

I'll be watching it, I'll be intrigued. But like the others, I'm not expecting any thing from it.

As mentioned, 7 and 8 I don't think were as good as 1-6, I still find them funny, but they didn't match the quality of 1-6. No sustained laughter, but still some funny moments.

One of the most disjointed returns I've seen. That wasn't a sitcom, it was a drama. Some funny moments, at least Series 8 had consistent funny moments, if not funny story lines.

That was just, weird and NOT Red Dwarf.

It sucked really badly. Seriously, super-suck. They should have finished it at the end of series 6.

So, a quarter of a year passes and I'm no less accurate...

And it manages to get worse...

I'm reminded of the episode of South Park with the rape of Indiana Jones...

The storyline is like an advert for itself...How did this get commissioned? Are the UKTV group this desperate?

The storyline tonight was worse, though I think there was some slightly more funny gags. Maybe 2 or 3.

This isn't Red Dwarf.

I can't believe how many times I've headbutted the keyboard and facepalmed this evening watching part 3.

Dreadful.

I watched part one recorded, thought it wasnt bad, then I watched Polymorph and was reminded how awesome series 1-5 were compared to this.

They actually managed to make Series 8 look hilarious.

I'm still genuinely shocked that the actors agreed to it.
