Red Dwarf Series 10 starts filming in December. Woo-Ha!

Is Rob Grant involved in this one? He's more the comedic one. Doug Naylor likes the darker stuff, ala RDVII and Last Human.

I don't have high expectations for this new series - Rob Grant was an essential part of the mix, it shows that he wasn't involved in series 7 or 8, or indeed series 9.

But something makes me yearn to watch more Red Dwarf, maybe it's because Friday night after school was Red Dwarf and curry night, settling down to watch the Rouge one on BBC2 at 9pm before bed. And of course, every series was watched by my family and I, revered from the first onwards. They will never see the heights of Polymorph or Gunmen of the Apocalypse again.

Fingers crossed though.

Wonder if Ed Bye is directing. He's done both good and bad series, but I think it's Grant's input which really shows. The poor series were done well, in all technical senses, but script-wise, there wasn't as much funny from Doug Naylor on his own.

Like I said above, read the novels Last Human (Naylor) and Backwards (Grant) and you can see a clear difference between drama and comedy.

Agreed on the difference in the novels.

I think backwards is perhaps my favourite - Infinity Welcomes and Better Than Life were written by both Naylor and Grant and you can tell.

Why will the man not work with Naylor anymore? Perhaps ego? It seems he's done sweet FA of merit since Dwarf 6 anyway:-

I think it was the stardom. By the time of VI, Red Dwarf was pretty big and what Grant Naylor were writing started to matter much more. I don't think Rob Grant neither liked nor could handle the pressure.

I have recently discovered themall on Dave, and am now a massive fan. Hope Series X is as good as the others.

That was an enjoyable episode. THis new series seems to have embraced current technology and put it in without massively changing the feel of the settings.

Glad to hear that it's a bit of a return to form for the boys from the dwarf. I'd love to see it, but I think I'm in for a long wait.

I've only seen the first two episodes so far, but they were brilliant. I hope red dwarf has a good, long run on Dave. There's life in the old dwarf yet.

The only thing that is bad about it really is the over-used canned laughter. I would prefer it to have either been removed or recorded at a screening.

I don't think Red Dwarf works without the background laughter, canned or studio.

Yes it does need the laughs, as it is a proper sitcom. However, canned really does not work, as some bits are too hard in places where it is just not needed. Studio audiences could really get into the sheer hilarity or disgust of moments eg when Lister eats Dog Food in 'Marooned', the roars of disgust are perfect.
'Dear Dave' wasn't the best of the series so far.

Just noticed this thread and thought I'd check in. Been a long time fan, having weathered the up's and down's of Red Dwarf's history.

The new series hasn't aired where I am yet, but am happy to see that the general concensus(sp?) here is that series X is good.

Which is good as I found that 'RD back to earth' was a disappointment. It had a lot of potential but so much of it didn't work.

Couldn't find a general RD thread so this will have to do. And it is on topic:

In series X, is it just me or do they seem to no longer be three million or so years from earth? In the first episode with Rimmer's brother they neither clarified that the quantum rod, the time travel wotsit of the week, brought Howard's ship 3 million years to the Dwarfers nor stated that the Dwarfers were taken back three million years to Howard's time. Nor did they say that Howard was also somehow three million years in the future and a hologram.

For the rest of the series it seemed as though they were actually in the 23rd century, just on their own on an abandoned ship. But I did enjoy series X, it was alright. Except for the Jesus episode. I absolutely could not suspend my disbelief at the artistic licence with them going back in time and asking if anyone spoke "English", or the language of the island of Britain, at least 500 years before the Angles or the Saxons even invaded. It's an incredibly poorly thought plot hole.

Looking forward to the new series though. XI and XII have already been done and dusted. I hope they find Kochanski just so I can see Chloe Annett on telly again.

Loved the show so much, but the last "new" episodes didn't really do it for me. I didn't even rate the last "proper" season too highly, I think it got too far away from the original concept.
