There's been quite a few comments and references made to RHCP but i've never seen any proper discussions. So let's discuss.

I've been a fan of the Chilis for about 3 years now and can safely say that they are my favourite band. Their blend of rock, punk, funk, improvisation and comedy have produced some of the greatest tracks ever made. Personal favourites (i haven't got Freaky Styley or RHCP):

Uplift Mofo Party Plan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
Uplift Mofo Party Plan - Behind The Sun

Mother's Milk - Knock Me Down
Mother's Milk - Higher Ground

One Hot Minute - Shallow Be Thy Game
One Hot Minute - Aeroplane

Californication - Otherside
Californication - Scar Tissue

By The Way - Venice Queen
By The Way - Minor Thing

Blood Sugar Sex Magic is without doubt their finest album. It's always a pleasure to sit down and admire the fluidity of it and to just receive track after track of classics.

Although i've never seen them live, i've got the Off The Map and Slane Castle DVDs and the Live In Hyde Park CDs, and they're just electric - some of the nicest musical moments (ever) are when Flea and John Fruciante get together and improvise.

Now to the most pressing matters: Stadium Arcadium

Their next album to follow By The Way. We should be expecting the album in May. Rick Rubin is once again helming this project, which is good and after seeing the video clip below i'm looking forward to a rather good album.

Nice little promotional video here that provides a clip of Dani California which will be their first release from the album.

A very good band indeed, though I can't really get into anything after One Hot Minute. It all just kind of got really poppy and mainstream. I like the Chillies of old... That's just me, and although Blood Sugar, was a great album, the flow of One Hot Minute and what it meant for the Peppers is far more important. Dave Navaro's work on that album and his influences can really be heard over all, kind of blending Chillies with Jane's Addiction... Flea's time with Jane's also didn't hurt the king of slap either. I'm waiting for their new album, but I hope they kind of go back to their roots a bit more and kind of stay out of the "teeny top 40s" with this one... Not that you have to be a teen to like their new stuff, but it helps... Personally, I wish Dave were still with the band... I think he was expecting a bit more out of the Jane's reunion and that's why he never stayed... At any rate, I'm sure this thread will be a good one generating some pretty good conversations...

Interesting. 'Most people' say that One Hot Minute is the Chili's worst album. Even the band refuse to play anything from One Hot Minute live. Personally i like the album, but i don't wish Dave was still in the band. John (Fruciante)'s return to the Chili's was just the best thing that could've happened.

A lot of friends who like the Chili's dislike By The Way. I don't dislike it, but i'm not over the moon about it in the way that listening to their older stuff makes me feel. Fruciante's solo album influences on By The Way are incredibly noticeable; the harmonies, the layering effects and the song writing. I enjoy By The Way purely because John was given a free rein.

Been a fan for a long time. I saw them at Wembley about 6 years ago and they were awesome.

Great band. 👍

In all honnesty, I've always been more of a Jane's fan any how, so perhaps I'm being biased. The songs from One Hot Minute are not as catchy as a lot of their newer stuff... It's not really made up of songs that you'd really get up and dance to, but the songs are a lot more deep... I think that's probably why they aren't playing that much of it... Because it clashes a lot with what they're doing now, as well as what they did in the past. Musicaly and also lyricaly, it head and shoulders over a lot of their stuff. It came at the end of a transition period for the band. The general public may not really like the album all that much, but ask most musicans and they'll say it's an amazing album... It still sold VERY well. Also, there was word of a falling out between Dave and the rest of the band after Jane's apparently tried to get Flea to join the dark side after his contributions to the Kettle Whistle Jane's Addiction Reunion Album... Another great album. But over all, I think it's just a sound style that preventing them from playing a lot of it in concerts. We're they to do something like an unplugged album, I'm sure you'd probably see at least a few of the songs on there, though honnestly, Dave's style is very hard to copy as he's an amazing and often underated guitarman.

I've been listening to them for around 6 or 8 years now. I saw them play in Montreal a few years ago, truly spectacular.

I admire them for what they can do with a song and a genre. They can create a rock masterpiece that doesn't have distortion, doesn't have any familiar structure, jsut simply amazing.

The weekend of the concert I had the oppurtunity to go to a bass workshop/question period with Flea for somehting like 5$. I have no clue why I didn't....

WOW! Talk about a missed op! Though don't worry too much about it. Chances are, you'd have been in a room with like 500 other people all geeking out over the fact that they're at a workshop with Flea... If, on the other hand it was a more private affair, dude, you missed out...

I heard it was a rather public affair. And when I say workshop, I'm sure it was just a demonstration more than anything.

I've been a fan of RHCP for quite a while. They're one of the few 90s mainstream bands I actually listen to. I'll be sure to get their new album when it comes out.

*EDIT* Anyone know if/when they are going on tour to support the new album?

Yes they are going on tour almost immediately after album release. I was going to get some tickets for one of their UK dates, but at £45 i couldn't get many people interested in joining me. Will look forward to a DVD hopefully afterwards :)

As soon as I saw your topic, that is what I immediately thought 👍

Dani California was not a disappointment at all. But then again, never have the Chili Peps (I love the phased fills in the latter portion of the song).

Even their so-so songs are killer compared to other bands that are as old. Good to see they're still rockin'!

I saw an interesting comment on Last.fm, agree/disagree with it as you will:

"Looking at previous single releases, the first single from Blood Sugar Sex Magik was Give It Away, which is a great song, but there's plenty of better songs on the album.

The two first singles on Californication were Scar Tissue and Around the World, which are't the best songs on the album by a long shot.

The first single on By the Way was By the Way, which, again is a really good song, but the next few singles were much better.

So I think the lesson is don't judge an album by it's single."

I like the thinking here, and i've gotta agree. Let's hope it's the same for Stadium Arcadium: If the album in general is better than Dani C, then we're in for a treat 👍

And on the day after the sabbath day and before monday, the lord said 'let this thread be revived' and revived it was.

I'm a very keen chilies fan, and in a recent interview, Chad Smith mentioned that they would be getting together at the end of the year to make some music. Now is family time.

👍

And what revive it was 👍

To be honest, I can't listen to their latest work, Stadium Arcadium. It's just too bland for me, and the backing vocals by Frusciante aren't nice either. But hey, everyone his own opinion, right?

However, I love the kind of work they did earlier on, One hot minute being my favourit. Songs like Aeroplane, My Friends, are always a pleasure to the ear. I also love songs like Under the Bridge, Californication, their very early work of which I cannot remember the name of...(I guess it's Blood, sugar,...)

All in all, a great band, but their latest album sounded like they were desperate to produce something succesful, I didn't like it, but they certainly succeeded at it 👍

There are some seriously good tracks on Stadium Arcadium, but I could easily cut it down to one CD. I saw them on the Arcadium tour, and was rather disappointed. They put on a too-short show for a too-long album. I still like them, and they're still one of my top bands.

I've been a fan for a long while now - By the Way was the first of their CDs I got on my sixteenth birthday (I know it was a 2002 release, but I never really got into music until around then) and while I was intially disappointed, I've since found it's a hidden gem - and I've got pretty much everything from Freaky Styley on; I'm only missing a few B-Sides from the Californication era. I was a little surprised to see some of the B-Sides from Stadium Arcadium had not made the final album, as I found it a little weak in the second half, almost as if it were an afterthought. It's still a great album, though.

Now I just need to find Anthony Kiedis' autobiography; I'm pretty sure it would be a good gift for my younger brother's birthday.

Yeah I was reading reviews on 'Scar Tissue' by keidis and it basically says your going to love him after you read it. However is isnt the history of RHCP everyone looked for.

Bram, 'My Friends' is an awesome song and I love the video. 'Does he ever wear a shirt?'

I dont think so :D
I also dont think Frusciante could have written that.

These are the latest songs I've discovered:

Because it was on By The Way?

I've been a casual Chilis fan for quite a few years now. They're a nice change from the rest of my CD collection (mostly 70s/80s/90s metal). Still haven't seen them live yet though...
