It's just getting beyond ridiculous. The entire entertainment industry has completely lost any shred of integrity, dignity, and creativity it might once have had.

While in the movies yesterday to watch Shrek III yesterday, I saw a trailer for a movie version of Hairspray. Not a remake (bad enough), of course, but a movie version of the Broadway musical version of the original John Waters movie masterpiece. I mean really - this is just beyond the pale. Just go watch the friggin' ORIGINAL MOVIE, fercryinoutloud. It's almost as bad as The Producers (which, I'm sure, is what made the execs greenlighting the new Hairspray decide they could milk that cow a little harder). Except, of course, The Producers already was a movie farce about producing a musical, so remaking a movie version of the Broadway musical version of a movie about producing a Broadway musical just sort of adds another bit of depth to the absurdity. At least, you can rationalize it that way.

But between sequels that shouldn't have been made, bad remakes of movies that weren't great to begin with, reality shows that have far less than nothing to do with 'reality', bands that should have retired already (or stayed retired), and the complete lack of standalone novels that aren't part of some larger series, I've totally lost faith in most forms of "entertainment".

Then, of course, as the icing on the cake, we have our pretentious friends at Rolling Stone magazine who sit in snotty, self-serving condemnation of it all... except when they have Pirates of the Caribbean III on the cover or they can do a hip style supplement and sell lots of expensive advertising.

I'm well aware that entertainment is a business first, and I don't have any problem with it. I just won't spend my money on things with zero integrity.

Personally speaking, I like musicals to some extent, so I loved The Producers. Chances are, I'll probably see Hairspray too, but maybe not... That one might be too gay for me...

I dunno. There are times when a sequel is necessary, and there are times when they are not. I don't think it would be fair to classify the next Batman movie, Dark Knight, a crappy rip-off. It should hopefully be better than the first movie, which was incredible to begin with.

...The big thing now is reviving old franchises, particularly after the success of the Batman re-launch, as well as Superman's to some extent as well. I constantly hear talk of another Terminator (sans Arnold), and there has been a BIG push as of late to have ROBOCOP redone as well (I'd want that).

We've clearly ran out of ideas it seems in some cases.

I think you've been haging around TVR&FF too much lately.

On topic:
I completely agree. They've taken the 'law' of sequels never being good and tried to challenge it... proving wrong over and over and over.

I personally stopped watching hollywood-esque movies some time ago, and to tell you the truth, it's worked out fine. I've also rediscovered great movies which I watched a long time ago and gotten back into them (like The Big Lebowski). Unfortunately, my wife likes chick flicks and romantic comedies (aren't they the same) and she's usually in charge of the rentals, since my movies are 'too experimental'... and she's been quite disappointed in her choices. I mean, if she doesn't like them, something very, very wrong must be going on with them.

And the whole concept of remakes is just beyond me. In the past they'd do a remake/homage to some great classic movie and not try to ruin it... lately it just seems they're trying to ruin it for everyone.

We've clearly ran out of ideas it seems in some cases.

My suggestion: go independent... it might be a bit weird at times, but the freshest ideas are there.

Wow, somebody never got their espresso this morning! :p j/k!!

I feel exactly the same way about music - many's the time I hear a song and think about calling 999 to report a murder  However, it's not all bad - Peter Jackson pulled off a real coup with 'King Kong', and even Ocean's 11 was a good film, as was the remake of 'Dawn Of The Dead'... it is possible for good film-makers to do justice to movie heritage, but as usual, it's far easier to desecrate it! All I can say is we should show our support for those who seek to preserve standards rather than those who destroy them, by putting our money where our mouths are - and if the rest of the paying public disagree, we shall reserve the right to RANT! :D
