Remember during the Viet Nam war all the protests and riots and the '68 Democratic Convention in Chicago? Remember the National Guard shooting students? Love-in's and communes and anti war rallies? The Black Panthers and the assasinations of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, John Kenedy and Bobby Kenedy. I bet it seemed like the world was coming apart at the seams. I don't think we're even close to that now. It can get a lot worse. But I don't think it will.

So where are all these peace lovin' pot smokin' free lovin' anti-war hippies now?

I'll tell you where they're not, they're not walking around looting the Gap in the name of peace or breaking office windows in hopes it will stop a war.

They are sitting on their well fed American asses in their nice American houses watching the war on their 64" flat screen TVs, hoping it'll be over soon so they can get back into the stock market and fill up their SUV for less than fifty bucks.

We're having teenage protests over here.

Very odd to see schoolkids on the street waving banners and chanting.

They marched past our office the other day chanting "1 2 3 4, we don't want your bloody war" there was a 5 6 7 8 thing as well can't remember what it was though. I'm told they knocked some cycle courier off his bike and gave him a bit of a kicking. Didn't see it in the news.

I'm quite glad to see that students of today have a bit up and go again even if i don't agree with what they're doing, particularly now Brits (and Americans) are out there fighting an dieing.....

What did the word Hippie mean? Was it something about being Hip? Or was it because of the low rise jeans worn back then?;)

I really don't know. Maybe we should call them flower children.

But I'm with Cartman from South Park on the Hippie issue.

i really don't get the "peace loving peoples" war protest becuase running and shouting in the streets and assaulting officers in not peacful

There's this one senior at our high school that has her car painted in hippie colors. Well, not really; but the car has a peace sign on the hood and flowers all over it.

Sounds like something right out of a Gap commercial.

I can't stand hippies because they have no comprehension of responsibility. If they could keep that to themselves it would be no problem. But they can't comprehend, and see as a detriment, that anyone else may have obligations, responsibilities, or a lifestyle that includes bathing, shaving, or having a place to live.

I used to live in Flagstaff, Arizona. This is a hippie town. I was a resturaunt manager and nearly my entire staff were hippies. They were totally unreliable and made my life really difficult. They were okay to hang around with, but all they wanted to do was shrooms. Pot was like air. A given necessity. Many of them didn't even have apartments and just lived in tents in the National Forest all summer... obviously cleanliness was a problem too. At a resturaunt this matters a lot. They had no idea what was going on but had lots of opinions about it, which they would spout off to anyone who could care less, between bong tokes.

I also lived in San Francisco. Ever been to Haight Asbury? What a dump (except for Amoeba Records). A bunch of grimy addict runaways pretending it's 1969, bumming smokes off everyone and begging for money. It was depressing. One guy asked me for a cig and I said no and kept walking, weaving in and out of the smelly dirty beggars called hippies. He got all pissed off and hollered profanities at me as I walked away. There was also an incident with some yellow eyed girl who said something bad about my VW (something about guaranteeing I'd roll it someday...?); I responded and she was ready to fight me and her freinds wer holding her back... the details of that one are a little fuzzy... it was a while ago.

Haight Asbury, maaaannn... peace and love. What a bunch of loosers.

Aah...

Can't we all just get a bong?

Why should glaucoma patients have all the fun?

It's a lungful of fun!

It's a special kind of stupid!

It seems to me that in this war, more Brits have died after being shot by Americans than anything else. What's the story?!

I heard there was some kind of targetting error in the Patriot missile system, that or the pilots may not have changed their planes' codes in time. Seems there is a friend or foe recognition system sent via signal. I'm not aware of many if any Brits being shot by Americans, I don't even know who the pilots in the downed helicopters were.

I understand that so far 6 British servicemen have died so far in combat.
2 killed by the Iraqis
2 killed by the Americans
2 killed by the British

The ones killed by the Americans were in an RAF Tornado shot down by a Patriot missile. These missiles have also locked on to US planes too.

But the British have still lost more servicemen to aircraft accidents than to fire, friendly or otherwise.

It does seem amazing that 12 years after the series of friendly-fire incidents in the last Gulf war, with all the time, money and technology spent on the issue, it still seems to be such a big problem.

Well, there ARE still the potheads, but they're more concerned about their pot than the war, so it all evens out. We don't hear of them, they don't hear of the war, we don't hear of them hearing of the war:D

Indeed - I wasn't being too serious, but I have seen it to be a large problem. Also, recently, a couple of American soldiers shot up a British TV reporter's Mitsubishi SUV (even though it was clearly marked "TV") and, although not a battle death, is worth noting.

Yeah - I couldn't agree more.

Sorry about the patriot missile incident, i must have been thinking of something else when the mention of many brits being shot by americanscame up. technically, there haven't been many.
