Remember The Super Prix? Coventry Street Circuit Annouced

In 1986 Birmingham (in the UK) created a brilliant street circuit which among other things hosted Formula 3000 races and was a reasonable success despite being pretty expensive to host. The final event was in 1990.

Now Coventry has announced they are to host an event on the ring road (2.25 miles) in 2015. At first it will be time trial event but they are hoping for competitive racing to follow. They want the trials to consist of Formula 3, BTCC & Carrera Cup cars.

My first thoughts are, I wish they just resurrected the Super Prix circuit in Birmingham exactly as it was. Firstly it looked like a awesome layout and secondly would look great against a modern skyline. The Coventry layout is just a giant circle and I'm sure is as much fun to race round as drive in rush hour.

Thoughts?

The old Brum Superprix was the first motorsport event i ever attended. :)

I really like the idea of the Coventry ring road trials, and it's fairly apt, what with Coventry's role in transport design etc etc.
 
Ah, Coventry, the most charismatic city in the world, with its beautiful art deco architecture, tiny alleyways full of Michelin-star restaurants, and a ring road which doesn't feature one of the worst pieces of road design in history which is almost specifically designed to cause traffic collisions...

Oh wait, the other thing.
 
At least there is a city in the UK with the balls to actually do something with the new legislation. I'd love to see a circuit around my home town of Oxford.
 
The problem is that most of the ordinary streets are extremely narrow - probably too narrow. Look at the old Canberra 400, where the main straight was barely wide enough for the starting grid; drivers couldn't open their doors without hitting a wall or one another. Once they drove to the grid, they were stuck there.
 
I'd hazard a guess they'll use the inside lane until they get to the roundabouts, where they'd go around them.

BTW, I still have no idea where in Birmingham the Superprix track lies despite living there for three months this summer.

Yada yada, the cathedral's very nice if nothing else. Mostly nothing else, as I recall. Happy days. In the rain mostly.

According to the article it might run in parks, or streets, or past Wimbley, or just not happen at all :)
 
Given the way the driving standards have haemorrhaged since the days of Andy Rouse and Steve Soper, I wouldn't really like to see the BTCC on a street circuit and the inevitable red flags due to a bottleneck.
 
I don't understand how people are going to be able to spectate in Coventry because the Ringroad for the most part is elevated.... unless they are going to build high grandstands which I doubt very much.

They should host the Formula E on the B'ham Superprix circuit and also have the Coventry time trial all on one mega weekend.

They could run a stage between Coventry and Birmingham reaching average speeds of up to 17 mph, roadworks-depending :D

I wouldn't mind designing a track in Southampton. It eminds me of a dream I had once of organising and designing a street track for Indycars.
